Preface
To begin with, I feel it necessary to try to explain the relationship of this family before going into David S. Scalf. I have realized in the past that some researchers were confused about these folks and exactly what their relationship to Lewis Scalf of 1745 was. For this reason I will attempt to explain the children of Lewis Scalf and why there has been so much confusion.
Recall that Lewis Scalf was born in 1745 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. His first wife is unknown at this time but his second wife was Elizabeth Blackburn whom he married February 28, 1777. Lewis and his first wife had a number of children but only four of these children can be identified from the records. I will list these children below in hopes they may be more easily identified.
It is unclear from the records if William, another son of Lewis, belonged to the first wife or if Elizabeth Blackburn was his mother. However, descendants place William's birth date around 1780. If this is correct, then Elizabeth was his mother and not the first wife of Lewis for he married Elizabeth Blackburn in 1777. If William were born 1780, he could not have been the son of the first wife. Research is ongoing on this line to try and resolve this.
What is most confusing to many is Benjamin and David S. Scalf. These two sons, came to the East Tennessee area around 1830 and settled. They also had children they named after each other and their father. I did not find the S in the name of David S. Scalf (son of Lewis) until the 1850 census of Carter County, which Bob Scalf of Knoxville, Tennessee so kindly submitted concerning David S. Scalf.
However I have tried to use this initial consistently throughout this chapter for identification
purposes only. That is why you will see the name listed as David S. Scalf
before 1850 in these writings. Below are the names of the early families I will be discussing. I will not
discuss the family of William (son of Lewis, 1745) in this chapter, but will do so later.
Children of Lewis Scalf (1745) and his first wife (Unknown):
1) John Scalf Sr.
2) Benjamin Scalf
3) David S. Scalf
4) Sarah Scalf (alias Capps).
Children of Lewis Scalf (1745) and Elizabeth Blackburn:
1) William Scalf/Scealf
Children of David S. Scalf---(son of Lewis 1745) Carter County, TN
2) David (Dave) Scalf
3) Malachi (Mac) Scalf
4) Benjamin (Ben) Scalf
Child of Benjamin Scalf--(son of Lewis 1745) Carter County, TN
1) Lewis Scalf--married--Nancy Koziah/Coziah in Washington County, TN in 1829.
David S. Scalf, (son of Lewis Scalf) decided to settle in East Tennessee in the Elizabethton area of Carter County, Tennessee after first coming to Washington County where he is found in the 1830 census. The name of David S. Scalf's wife is not known for certain by me. I have searched many marriage records of North and South Carolina, as well as Carter County, Tennessee and I do not find a record of marriage for David S. Scalf. However, I have not been able to search all of the church records which do hold marriage records.
A search of the church records in Iredell County or any county that his father was in might prove fruitful concerning this. The marriage record may have been destroyed by fire, lost, or any number of things that took place during the earlier frontier days, or it may simply not have been recorded at all.
It is believed by some that the Nancy living in the home of Levi Taylor with David S. Scalf in the 1850 census of Carter County, Tennessee was the wife of this David S. Scalf. I cannot say that she was or she wasn't. I can only present my thoughts on this. This is a situation where I think it should be left entirely up to the reader to decide after the evidence is presented. It is however, an avenue I believe that should be researched more thoroughly before making a final decision.
David S. Scalf (son of Lewis Scalf) is difficult to follow on the census records before he came to the region of East Tennessee and it is even more difficult to piece his life together from the records. I have found very few records referring to this David S. Scalf. Some believe that he is the same David Scaff listed in the census records of North Carolina living in the Edenton District of Camden County, North Carolina in 1790 and possibly even the same David found in the Pasquotank area in 1820 with the spelling of SCAFF.
I list an excerpt here from the book of Henry P. Scalf concerning David SCAFF from the 1790 Edenton District of North Carolina:
"David Scalf and wife first appear in the 1790 Census of Edenton District, Camden County, North Carolina. At that time they had no children. His name was written as David SCAFF." (Chapter XIV, Miscellaneous Families, f, Scalfs of Strawberry Plains by Henry P. Scalf from his book Chronicles of the Scalf Family posted on the Scalf Family Website, http://www.scalf-family.org/2ndIndex.htm)
It is my opinion that the David SCAFF found in the Edenton District of Camden County was not the same person as David S. SCALF. A David SCAFF was enumerated in the 1820 census of Pasquotank County, North Carolina while a David SCALF was enumerated in the 1820 census of Greenville, South Carolina. I doubt that these two men could not have been in both of these places at the same time.
No doubt, Henry did not see the 1820 census of South Carolina and of course, would have assumed this David SCAFF to be the David who was the son of Lewis. Elmer found this David SCALF to be in South Carolina, as I have.
The following is an excerpt from the Scalf Family History by Elmer Scalf. "Both David and his father, Lewis Scalf, are listed in the 1820 Greenville County, South Carolina Census." (Scalf Family History, Chapter XIII--Second paragraph).
The Internet has made it much more convenient to study the history of the various counties and states. To help in your research, please take advantage of the information provided concerning the areas our ancestors lived in. This can be very valuable in research. Instead of scanning pages of books, I will list whenever possible, the URL addresses which will help with this. A study of the history of Pasquotank County, North Carolina area reveals that David SCAFF may not have moved from the area at all. This history can be found at this address: http://www.geocities.com/heartland/plains/6598/ncgenweb.htm
It appears that David SCAFF probably remained in the area of Pasquotank County, North Carolina, as did other members of the same spelling. I can only speculate as to who this David SCAFF was and I will address that issue later. At this time, the main concentration will be on the David whose surname is spelled SCALF.I do not find David S. Scalf in 1800, nor do I find his brother, Benjamin (sons of Lewis Scalf). Benjamin will be discussed in another chapter, but it should be noted here that they were often found near each other. By 1810, they are in Iredell County, North Carolina together and in 1820, there is a David Scalf listed in Greeneville County, South Carolina, but I find no Benjamin in either North Carolina or South Carolina. Elmer Scalf states that Benjamin was in Tennessee in 1820. (See Scalf Family History, Chapter XIII, Pargraph 2). Henry makes no mention of where he thought Benjamin was at that time.
David SCALF does not have the initial S. in his name on this census. The initial S does not show up until the 1850 census of Carter County, Tennessee and has been used in this writing prior to that time only to separate this David S. Scalf from his son, David (Dave) who was not found with any initial in his name. However, it has been related through a descendant, Mrs. Rhoda Motychak, that the son, David, was known as Dave Scalf.
By 1830, a David S. Scalf and Benjamin Scalf show up in the East Tennessee area of Washington County, Tennessee. I find them in Washington County, Tennessee on the 1830 census. The following is an attempt to track David S. Scalf and Benjamin from 1790 in North Carolina to their appearance on the 1830 census of East Tennessee.
Through bits and pieces of information concerning descendants who may possibly trace back to David S. Scalf or his brother, Benjamin, I have concluded that it is quite possible they were in the Habersham County, Georgia area during some of these censuses and may possibly be found there when not found in North Carolina, South Carolina or Tennessee. I have not had occasion to look at these census records and a search of those may provide an answer.
1790--- First Census of the United States, Edenton District, Camden County, NC-----From the 1790 census of Camden County, North Carolina, a David Scaff is listed as head of house with a wife. I do not believe this is David Scalf of Carter County, TN for this David can be found later in that area.
1800----In the 1800 NC census, John and Lewis are in Surry Co. NC. Whether this is John Sr. or not, I cannot say with certainty but from all appearances, it most likely is. John is often found near Lewis until after 1805 when he gets into trouble in Surry Co. NC (see Scalf Family History by Elmer Scalf pg. 16). I do not find David S. Scalf or Benjamin in 1800.
1810----Benjamin and David S. Scalf are both listed in the Iredell Co. NC census and father, Lewis, with son William, is over in Wilkes County, North Carolina. I believe John Sr. went directly to VA when he left Surry County, NC around 1806.
1820----A David S. Scalf is listed on the 1820 Greenville County, South Carolina census but no Benjamin Scalf shows up there. There is still a David Scaff in Pasquotank County, NC and is probably the same David that is there in 1790 in Camden County. There is also a John Scaff here in 1820 and a Mrs. Scaff in Halifax Co. North Carolina.
Elmer states in his book, Scalf Family History that Lewis had bought land in Habersham County, Georgia by 1825 (page 18). This could indicate that Lewis and William were in Georgia by 1820 or at least in Greenville, South Carolina.
1830----This brings us to the 1830 census where David S. Scalf and Benjamin now show up together in Tennessee for the first time. John Sr. (son of Lewis Scalf) is over in Russell County, Virginia and William (son of Lewis Scalf) is in Habersham County, Georgia with Lewis in 1830. Lewis died sometime between 1837 and 1840.
Before going into the 1830 census of Washington County, Tennessee, I would like to list the family of David S. Scalf found in the 1810 Iredell County, North Carolina census. It is unknown where David married, but most likely it was around Iredell County for he is listed in that census as follows:
1810 Iredell County, North Carolina census:
| One male, age 26-45 years |
Estimated birth |
1765-1784 |
| One female age 16-26 years | " | 1784-1794 |
| One female age 26-45 years | " | 1765-1784 |
As can be seen, David S. Scalf only had one child at this time and this daughter was born between 1784 and 1794, so we know that David had begun his family by 1784. I would assume by this that he had more children born before 1800. I have not seen the full census where he is listed in Greenville, South Carolina, only the index. The 1820 census of Greenville, South Carolina should show how many more children he had by 1800.
I am assuming from this information that Mahala Scalf who married William Moon on September 2, 1825 and Malinda Scalf who married first to James Moore on February 24, 1827 then second to William L. Cash on March 17, 1836 in Carter County, Tennessee were David Scalfs children. Their birth dates could range in this time-frame according to the dates they married. However, they also could have been the daughters of Benjamin Scalf, his brother. More records might eventually determine this.
I do not know where Malinda Scalf Moore Cash settled, but I believe the Cash family of Carter County are most likely her descendants. There has been some recent information from a descendant of the Moon family that indicates Mahala and her husband moved to Sevier County, Tennessee where they raised their family.
David S. Scalf and Benjamin are both found in the 1830 East Tennessee census of Washington County, Tennessee. I have listed the census as it originally reads and then deciphered it below that. I have also included my estimations of the births.
In March of 2001, I went back to the library and went over these censuses to make sure I had not missed anything. I did not read the microfilm at this time, but rather looked at the transcribed portion, which listed the Scalf families. If anyone has something different from these censuses, it would be a good idea to go back and look at the original microfilm for I have found the transcribed copies to be different in some cases.
I will state how these censuses are read according to what is stated in the book.
The first line, always reading from left to right is:
males under 5 years old.
males from ages 5-10 years of age.
males from ages 10-15 years of age.
males from ages 15-20 years of age.
males from ages 20-30 years of age
males from ages 30-40 years of age
males from ages 40-50 years of age
males from ages 50-60 years of age
males from ages 60-70 years of age
males from ages 70-80 years of age
males from ages 80-90 years of age
males from ages 90-100 years of age.
There is a hyphen to divide the male ages from the female ages, but the female side reads the same way. As you will notice, I did not carry out the zeros after the last male and female listed. These represent other things such as slaves owned, etc. Since there was nothing but zeros listed, I have not included anything else.

| 1 female 10 - 15 | 1815-1820 |
| 1 female 30 - 40 | 1790-1800 |
This census reflects that this David is probably the David S. Scalf, son of Lewis Scalf. The oldest male here is born between 1770 and 1780 and most likely would be him. However, note that the oldest female here is born between 1790 and 1800 and the oldest children are born between 1815 and 1820.
If this is the Nancy in the home of Levi Taylor with David S. Scalf in 1850 and her age is correct, then she is quite a bit younger than David S.. That alone, does not mean much for ages were often stated incorrectly and it was not uncommon for a woman to be much younger than her husband.
On page 253 of the transcribed copy of the 1830 census by Sistler is a Benjamin Scalf and family.
SCALF, Benjamin

| 1 female 15 - 20 | 1810-1815 |
| 1 female 40 - 50 | 1780-1790 |
Henry states that Benjamin is a decade older than his brother David S. Scalf in this census. He does appear to be older than David according to this census and most likely was born between John Sr., and David S. Scalf. However, I can only give a rough estimate of his birth and that would be at least around 1767-1772 since David is said to have been born about 1772 and in my opinion, John Sr. was born around 1765 at least. On page 249 of the transcribed census of Sistler is listed an Elizabeth Scalf as head of house. This indicates that her husband has died, or she could have been a single daughter of either Benjamin or David S. Scalf. Elizabeth is listed only to show the families found in the 1830 census of East Tennessee. I have not been able to determine where this Elizabeth belongs at this time. I believe this Elizabeth to be the same person listed later as Betsy with children, Phebe and Dan.

From the Washington County, Tennessee marriages, this Lewis Scalf married Nancy Koziah/Coziah on September 12, 1829. I have listed this Lewis here only to show his age and possibly to show the difference in his age compared to his grandfather, Lewis Scalf of 1745 who was the father of David S. Scalf and Benjamin Scalf. It is my opinion this Lewis was the son of Benjamin Scalf and will be covered in that chapter.

I have listed the David (Dave) Scalf family from the 1840 census of Sullivan County, Tennessee
only to show that this was the only David I found in the 1840 census records. This could not
have been David S. Scalf and was most likely his son, David (Dave) Scalf.

It would seem that there should have been more of the children of David S. Scalf in their own homes at this time if there were others besides Benjamin (Ben) David (Dave) Malachi (Mac) and Sarah Scalf Taylor. If there was another girl, I don't know her married name. Elmer lists in his book that there was a Rebecca Scalf who was a sister to this Sarah. The following is an excerpt from the Scalf Family History, Chapter XIII.
"In 1830, at the age of 58, David is listed in the census of that year as a resident of Washington County, Tennessee. Living with David in 1830 were his wife, Nancy, and children Benjamin, Malachi, David, William, Rebecca and Sarah. David's older brother, Benjamin, had evidently preceded him to Washington County as he too is listed in the 1830 Washington County, Tennessee Census. Several of David's children apparently moved to Carter County, Tennessee and married there." If in fact, David S. Scalf had a daughter, Rebecca, I have not found her. I have found a Rebecca Scalf who married James Valentine Hankle/Hinkle in Carter County. However, other evidence points to this Rebecca being the daughter of Benjamin, the brother of David S. Scalf and will be discussed in the chapter of Benjamin Scalf.
An older David S. Scalf appears in the census of 1850 in the home of Levi Taylor. With him is a Nancy Scalf who appears to be about 19 years younger than David S. Scalf. I did not find David S. and Nancy in the 1840 census of Carter, Washington or Sullivan Counties.
David S. Scalf and Nancy may have been living in the home of a son or daughter in 1840 as they are in 1850 and this might be the reason I did not find them listed in the 1840 census records. The fact that they are in the home of the daughter and son-in-law of David S. Scalf in 1850 would indicate they may have been there in 1840 but were missed.
1850 CENSUS---CARTER CO.
David S. Scalf and Nancy Scalf are living in the home of Levi Taylor on the 1850 census.

Note that Nancy's birth date would fall around 1791 on this census. Levi Taylor married Sarah Scalf (Scalf Family website at www.scalf-family.org--Motychak Interview #1). From this evidence it appears that David S. Scalf was Sarah's father.
David S. and Nancy are no longer found after the 1850 census. As can be seen above, there is a female in the earlier census matching the birth date of Nancy and is most likely the female on the 1830 census in the home of David S. with a birth date of 1790-1800.
It should be noted here that I have found no concrete evidence that the wife of David S. Scalf was this Nancy in the home of Levi Taylor in 1850. Even though she is found in the home of David S., in 1830, does not necessarily mean that she was his wife.
I have made the mistake in assuming that because someone was in the home that they were naturally the wife or husband. Due to the ages involved here, I think it best to search for something to support this. There are too many years involved between David S. and Nancy that leaves a large margin for speculation. This speculation could go either way without some concrete evidence or at least, enough supportive clues to convincingly be satisfied that she was his wife.
The main thing we need to remember here is that this David S. Scalf was not the person that married Nancy Koziah/Coziah. As many others have done after reading the previous works, I naturally assumed this David was the person who married Nancy Koziah/Coziah. Upon further research and study, I realized that this was confusing and I had jumped to the conclusion that the Nancy in the home of Levi Taylor in 1850 was Nancy Koziah/Coziah. She was not this Nancy and if she were the wife of David S. Scalf, then I have no knowledge of her surname.
Nancy Koziah/Coziah of Carter County married Lewis Scalf, the son of Benjamin Scalf. Benjamin was the son of Lewis Scalf who was born 1745. Therefore, Lewis of 1745 had a grandson named Lewis and this adds to the confusion of the early Scalf families.
I would also like to say that if I have led anyone to believe that this Nancy Koziah/ Coziah was the wife of David S. Scalf, I apologize for I was confused between the two Nancys as well.
I have spoken with descendants of this line over the years by telephone, letter and email and clues have filtered in concerning the lines of David S. Scalf and Benjamin Scalf. However, at this time, there is still no sufficient evidence to comfortably place the children of these two men into their prospective places in the family tree with the exception of David (Dave), Benjamin (Ben), Malachi (Mac) and Sarah Scalf Taylor who Mrs. Motychak mentioned in her interview.
If any other children were in Carter or Washington County, Tennessee, I have no documentation to support that they belonged to David S. Scalf. However, I have taken the liberty to add a couple that I believe from the meager evidence were the children of David S. Scalf. Please keep in mind that only the three brothers and the sister Sarah, are the only children that can be placed with evidence as being the children of David S. Scalf'.
Had these two men (David S. and Benjamin) not been in the same locality at the same time, with children near the same ages, it would probably not be so difficult to determine from the evidence which one they belonged to. It appears that Benjamin did move on to Illinois and I believe most, (if not all) of his children moved on to other areas of the country with the majority of the family of David S. Scalf remaining in Carter, Washington and Sullivan Counties.
There were other Scalf family members in the area who married in Carter and Washington Counties and I am reasonably sure they are either the children of Benjamin or David S. Scalf. My ancestor, Berryman Scalf was also in Washington County and I have found no evidence to support them as being his children. There is also another family that does not seem to fit either of the three, Benjamin, David S., or Berryman's lines. This family appears to be from one of the lines from Virginia and will be discussed as well. Berryman was the son of John Scalf Sr.
There is a William Scalf found very early in the area that is a possible son of David S. Scalf and I say "possible" only because he remained in the area and his birth date reflects that he might be a son.
Please remember this when you are searching for your ancestor. If you think you may trace back to Benjamin, then you may possibly trace back to David S. Scalf instead. Somewhere, an answer to this mystery is waiting to be found!!
Another thing to keep in mind about the Carter/Washington/Sullivan County area, is the fact that this area lies very close to Scott and Russell County, Virginia where John Scalf Sr., John Jr., Brittan and Ira were living and don't forget the brother, Lee Scalf, that we have found nothing on after 1840. All these factors need to be weighed before determining what family some of these folks descend from.
Our East Tennessee branch of the Scalf family was not inclined to leave wills and apparently, not too inclined to leave much documentation at all, or the records have been lost or destroyed. Whichever the case, it makes it difficult to determine the proper families their descendants belong in.
Many records were lost and destroyed during the Civil War. The East Tennessee region was a "hot bed" for conflict during this time. The Carter/Washington/Greene/ Hawkins and Sullivan County area was in turmoil during the Civil War with the Union and the Confederacy both camped here. Our Washington, Sullivan and Carter County cousins were fighting each other during this turmoil.
Not only was this area a wilderness but these folks also experienced more than their share of epidemics such as influenza, typhoid, cholera, and diphtheria, along with the common ailments of the day. Many families were completely wiped out during these epidemics.
The East Tennessee region was not exempt from Indian attacks either. The Maranda White and Elizabeth Scalf White family is said to have been killed by Indians and their children were raised by family members.
The Asiatic cholera epidemic that began in the Mississippi Valley about 1832, reached Jonesborough (Washington County, Tennessee) about 1873 and took its toll on the families of the area with about 60% of the folks having cholera before it ran its course. Three doctors, four ministers and some of the townsfolk remained to care for the sick and bury the dead, but others packed up and left the area with some returning later on. Some families did not return. No doubt, some of our Scalf family died during this epidemic.
The mountains, hills, and valleys of the East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and North Carolina region are a breathtaking and beautiful panorama of color and wildlife. I have not seen anything to compare with it in my travels. However, during the time of our ancestors, though beautiful it was, it was a very dangerous region.
Death was just a breath away in many instances. Doctors were few and very far between. Rattlesnakes, copperheads, bear, panther and other wild animals abounded through the mountainous region. If one survived Indian attacks, wild animals, childbirth and the common ailments of the day, there were epidemics such as cholera, diphtheria, typhoid and influenza to contend with.
Farming was the main occupation of the day and in the mountainous areas this was not an easy task. There was no convenient farm equipment to make it easier and the land was worked mostly by hand-made equipment. If you have ever seen, or have been involved in plowing with a mule or a horse in the mountains then you have had a first-hand experience concerning back-breaking work. This was not an easy task on level ground, but certainly more difficult on the side of a hill or a mountain.
Tobacco farming was, and still is, a livelihood in this area and that was another experience for the farmer. This required many hours in the sun, walking along in a stooped position with a handmade tobacco setter ( a wooden stick) with which to make holes in the ground to set the plants, one at time.
Our ancestors were up at 5 a.m. in the morning, had breakfast and spent the day working. After a lunch break, they were right back at it until sundown. I suppose it sounds like a boring life, but I'm sure their circulatory system was much healthier than ours!
Often, water would have to be hauled in barrels up the sides of the hills or mountains by mule or horse in areas where no water supply was close by. The water was poured into the ground as the plant was set. Work was not over after the plants were set either. I won't go into the process of tobacco farming but it was very hard work at that time and still is today even with modern equipment..
In many instances, farm work was done with "gun in hand" or at least nearby, as was the case in many regions in the past. Many families lived great distances apart and were alone to defend themselves from attacks of any nature. The Carter County area is a valley that borders the mountains of North Carolina and was a heavily traveled area from North Carolina into Tennessee.
Carter County was formed from Washington County, Tennessee in January of 1796 before Tennessee was a state. Five months later, in June of 1796, President George Washington signed a bill admitting Tennessee as the sixteenth state. It was named for Landon Carter and the county seat was Elizabethton, which was named for Elizabeth McLin the wife of Landon Carter. (Carter County History, http://www.tngenweb.org/carter/#HISTORY).
I have corresponded with a number of other researchers who appear to be from the line of David S. Scalf and they have contributed also to my being able to support what I have compiled from the census records and marriages of Carter, Washington and Sullivan County. For this, I am very grateful and I have tried to list their names with the descendant charts in acknowledgment of their contributions. However, I am not without error and some may not be listed. In studying the census records of Carter and Sullivan County, Tennessee, I have arrived at the conclusion that the wife of David S. Scalf might have possibly still been living in 1860. However, there is some conflict in the records concerning her name.
Recalling the 1850 census of Carter County, where David S. Scalf and Nancy Scalf are found in the home of Levi Taylor, the census suggests that she might have been his wife and that her name was Nancy. On the 1860 census of Sullivan County, Tennessee, a Mary Scalf is found in the home of Benjamin (Ben) Scalf, who is believed to be one of the sons of David S. Scalf.
This Mary in Benjamin's (Ben) home is listed as 72 years old and would have been born about 1788. This Benjamin was born about 1829. She appears to be the mother of this Benjamin. If this is correct, then this would have been the wife of David S. Scalf. The name might have been transcribed incorrectly however, and the name may have actually been Nancy or the 1850 census might have been incorrect on the name since it was also a transcribed copy. I list the information on this Benjamin below to show the connection. The children of David S. Scalf will be listed in a separate chapter, but I feel it necessary to list some about Benjamin here.
Benjamin (Ben) born 1829 and probable brother of Malachi (Mac) and David (Dave) is found in the 1850 Carter County, Tennessee census with wife, Lydia who was probably Lydia Mayfield who married Benjamin Scalf in 1847 (Carter County marriages-Scalf Family History). Benjamin is listed as 21 years old and Lydia is listed as 18 years old. They have a son, Isaac who is 2 years old and a son, Jesse one month old. Benjamin's birth date would fall around 1829. I feel certain this is Benjamin (Ben) Mrs. Motychak spoke of as being the brother of David (Dave) and Malachi (Mac) Scalf.

Kilgore 1987.

Going to the 1860 census, Benjamin is found listed as Benjamin SCALP. His age is now 30 years old and again his birth date falls around 1830 which is only a year off from the 1850 census and no other Benjamin is found in the area. His wife is now Rhoda, but I find no marriage record to supply the maiden name and it is possible that Lydia used a first or middle name on this census.
I do not believe this is the case since the ages of the two women are quite different. It should be noted here that a Benjamin Scalf did marry a Rosanna Helton (Hilton?) March 22, 1860 in Carter County, Tennessee. I do not have any knowledge of the month this census was enumerated in that year, but it is possible she is the same person named Rhoda on the census using Rhoda as a short name for Rosanna.
Son Isaac, is in the home and listed as 12 years old, which coincides with the 1850 census. Son, Jesse is not in the home. I feel sure this is the same Jesse found on the mortality schedules of East Tennessee that died of Scrofula as a child. However, a Mary Scalp, age 72 is listed in the home.

What is significant here is the fact that if this was Benjamin's (Ben) mother and if this Benjamin was in fact, the brother of Malachi and David, then this might also be the wife of David S. Scalf of 1760-1770 and she is still living in 1860. Another significant factor here is the Nancy in the 1850 census in the home of Levi Taylor with David S. Scalf. It appears that this could be the same person as the Mary in 1860 in Benjamin's (Ben) home.
My theory on this:
David S. Scalf and wife, (Nancy) was living with their daughter, Sarah Scalf Taylor and her
husband Levi in 1850. David S. Scalf died between 1850 and 1860 and his wife, (Nancy?
Mary?) went to live with her youngest son, Benjamin. This was the common practice of the day.
The youngest son inherited the care of his mother at his father's death. Why is the name Mary
instead of Nancy?
Keep in mind, these are transcribed records from microfilm. Microfilm can be difficult to read on census records from these earlier periods and two different sets of eyes will not always see the same things. Which name is correct I can not say at this point. In my experience, if the name so closely resembled Mary to one person and Nancy to another, then this microfilm was very difficult to read and I don't feel I could read it any better than the previous transcribers and would most likely come up with the same thing they did.
If more than one person has read the 1850 microfilmed census on this family and comes to the conclusion that Nancy was most certainly the name in the 1850 census and not Mary, then most likely, the 1860 census reading was inaccurate. I do feel sure that one or the other is inaccurate.
According to estimation, Nancy (1850 census) would have been born around 1790 - 1793. Mary (1860 census) was born around 1788. This is only a small difference in comparison on the census records concerning birth dates. I feel certain she is one and the same and the mother of Sarah, Malachi (Mac), David (Dave) and Benjamin (Ben) Scalf and the wife of David S. Scalf, son of Lewis of 1745 Pasquotank County, North Carolina.
Another possibility is that the name was both, Nancy Mary or Mary Nancy, but unlikely. In my opinion, one of these is wrong. The dates of birth differ by three years on these women and that is not a big difference and falls within the normal range of time one should allow on the ages given at that time.
Whatever the case, I feel comfortable in saying that the Mary on the 1860 census and the Nancy from the 1850 census was probably the same person and was most likely the wife of David S. Scalf and she was still living in 1860. I also feel that she was most likely his first and only wife. I have based this conclusion only on the fact that she was living in the home of Benjamin (Ben) (probable son of David S. Scalf) and his family. A more in-depth search of the records may reveal more precise information concerning these families.
I cannot say with certainty that David S. Scalf, son of Lewis Scalf, was in fact, the father of anyone from the Carter, Washington, or Sullivan County area, other than the children mentioned by Mrs. Rhoda Motychak. Although, the span of years between David S. Scalf (1760- 1770) and son, Malachi suggests that David S. Scalf could have been his grandfather and not his father, we would have to assume he was the father for I have not found any records suggesting another Scalf male was living in Carter or the surrounding area that may have been their father during this time-span.
What is fact is, David S. Scalf was in Washington County and settled in Carter County, Tennessee and there were (and still are) descendants living there. Whether David S. Scalf is the father or grandfather remains to be determined by whatever records might possibly still be found.
Please note: These writings are an effort to discuss what I believe to be the children of Lewis Scalf of 1745 that settled in the Carter/Washington and Sullivan County areas during 1830 and their descendants. Please keep in mind that in part, some of this is only my speculation as has been noted. I feel the census records of the area support this speculation in some cases, but speculation is not documentation and should not be treated as such.
As with any genealogy, one must realize that speculation will, and must exist. Without it, we
would not have the incentive to find the facts. Speculation can be a good thing, but not if it is
treated as fact. I am not offended by disagreement of my speculation and it is my desire that it
will help provide clues with which to find the facts.
