David (Dave) Scalf was part of "Witcher's Sullivan County Local Defense Troops" in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. (Roster of Tennesseans in the Civil War). His brother, Malachi and his two sons, William (Bill) and James (Jim) joined the Union Army during the war. (Motychak interview #2, Scalf Family website -- http://www.scalf-family.org/index.htm)
I have not learned a great deal about this David (Dave) Scalf other than what Mrs. Motychak relayed to Bob Scalf of Knoxville, Tennessee and from the census records of Sullivan County, Tennessee. I have been fortunate enough to speak with different descendants and with the help of the interviews from the Scalf Family website, I have managed to compile some missing pieces of this family.
Here, I will present the descendants of David (Dave) Scalf as I have been able to compile them and present the records from the censuses concerning them. There is some conflict in the census records of Sullivan County, Tennessee concerning the correct name of David (Dave) Scalf. The name appears in the 1870 census of Sullivan County as Daniel. However, it is my belief that this was a transcribing error, as this census was taken from the book and not the original microfilm. A study of that microfilm may reveal that Daniel should have been David.
Although, it is possible that he was named David Daniel, I have not found any supporting
evidence of that fact and this is the only record I have seen that even suggests a name other than
David. The 1870 census of Sullivan County was very hard to read and someone probably
transcribed the name as Daniel by mistake. Whatever the problem was, this appears to be the
same person as David for he has the same children.
Upon review of the microfilm copy of the 1870 Sullivan County, Tennessee census,
it is my belief that the name Daniel was in fact, a transcribing error.
Thanks to Bob Scalf of Knoxville, Tennessee we can now view the original
microfilm census on the website, which will display how this name appeared on
the original record.
In my opinion, a study of this microfilm reveals that the name Daniel was most likely, David. This name was transcribed from the original microfilm of the census and placed in the census books of the 1870 census of Sullivan County, Tennessee. As stated before, whenever materials are transcribed, the results are only as correct as the eyes that see the material.
At first glance of this name on microfilm, one might read the name as David or Daniel, and the person that transcribed the microfilm for the census books no doubt had a struggle with this and determined the name to be Daniel. This is not meant to say that the transcriber did not try to do a good job of transcribing, but only to say that many things were often mistaken due to this process. The only absolute way to resolve these issues is to look at the original record.
Considering the personal knowledge of David’s name from the descendants of this line, and the knowledge that the name had been listed previously in the records as David, one would certainly believe it to be David at first glance. However, the transcriber did not have this previous family knowledge of the name and observing that the letter (d) was not closed on the end, the transcriber naturally assumed the name to be Daniel and therefore, transcribed David’s name from the microfilm as Daniel. As can be seen in the record, the (v) appeared to be an (n) and the writing of the last (d) appears not to have been closed up which gives the appearance of an (e). Of course in either name, David or Daniel, the letter (i) was dotted.
Recalling the chapter of David S. Scalf, son, Benjamin Scalf, was living in Sullivan County, Tennessee at the time of the 1860 census. In the home of this Benjamin Scalf, was listed a Mary Scalf, age 72 and from the estimation of her age, she would have been born about 1788. This fact, coupled with the knowledge that during these times it was a common practice for the youngest son to be charged with the care of his mother after his father died. This would seem to confirm that Mary Scalf was the mother of this Benjamin Scalf. Information was related by Mrs. Motychak that David (Dave) and Malachi had a brother, Benjamin. (Motychak Interview #1)
All these factors seem to conclude that this was Mary Scalf, wife of David S. Scalf and the mother of David (Dave) Malachi (Mac) and Benjamin (Ben) Scalf. This same Mary is found in the home of her youngest son, Benjamin, in 1860. Mrs. Motychak also related that Benjamin (Ben) was the youngest. (Motychak Interview #1)
In reference to the above, a descendant submitted a document of oath concerning the age of David (Dave) Scalf. It cannot be said with absolute certainty that his David was in fact, the same David (Dave) who was the son of David S. Scalf, but in all likelihood he was. There was no other David Scalf in the area that would fit the birth date other than David (Dave) Scalf, son of David S. Scalf.
Diane McGreevy, a descendant of David (Dave) Scalf sent Bob Scalf a typed copy of a document stating the birth date of David Scalf. At first, this was not recognized as possibly being the David (Dave) Scalf whom Mrs. Motychak spoke of. On further examination of this document, the dates were calculated and the birth date for David (Dave) Scalf was determined to be around 1819. The lady signing this document with her x was named Mary Scalf. This proves that only that a David Scalf of Sullivan County, Tennessee was the son of one, Mary Scalf of Sullivan County, Tennessee.
This does not prove that this was the same David as (Dave) Scalf mentioned in the interview with Mrs. Motychak and it does not prove that this is the same Mary who was living in the home of Benjamin Scalf in 1860. However, the references and clues are very substantial in concluding that there is a very strong possibility that these are the same folks. I present here a typed copy of this oath from Mary Scalf concerning the birth date of her son, David Scalf.

The
deduction of 45 from the year 1863 equals 1818 and the birth date of this David
Scalf would be November 25, 1818. It
is unknown of course why this oath was needed, but one assumption could be the
Civil War or something pertaining to it, since the war was going on at that
time.
David
(Dave) was still living in Sullivan County, Tennessee in 1870 as can be seen on
the census records of that year. By
1880, the records show that David (Dave) moved back to Carter County, Tennessee
where his father had lived previously. More
confirmation that this is the same David (Dave) Scalf is submitted from Diane
McGreevy, when she also sent a document stating that David entered five acres in
Carter County on March 10, 1880. This
is a typed copy from that document. A
copy of the original can be seen at (Scalf Family Website)

E _____
Rec’d of David Scalf $235 the Amt of his tax in Dist 9 for 1852. 3&4
M Massingill Dst. Clk ?
The
name after the E. is not recognizable and the title of Mr. Massingill might be
Dst. Clerk or something else, but it appears to be District Clerk.
Another interesting fact here is that it is stated that David paid $235,
the amount of his tax for 1852, 53 and 54.
It appears that this could have been a record where his father, David S.
Scalf paid his taxes for those years and this simply shows they had been paid,
or son, David had to pay back taxes on the land that may have originally
belonged to his father. It isn’t
clear as to what this might mean. Another
possibility here is that David (Dave) owned the land in 1852, 53 and 54, but
lived in Sullivan County during that time.
David
(Dave), son of David S., most likely died between 1880 and 1900 for his wife,
Susannah shows up then on the 1900 census of Carter County, Tennessee with her
name listed as Susan. David (Dave)
and Susannah lived in Sullivan County in 1860, 1870 and then moves to Carter in
1880 according to the census records. The
previous tax record above confirms that David was in Carter County, Tennessee in
1880 and that his wife, Susan remained there after his death.
David’s brother, Benjamin, was also living in Sullivan County,
Tennessee in 1860 and had Mary Scalf in his home, who appears to be the mother
of David (Dave) and Benjamin (Ben).
I
believe this to be the same Mary that signed the oath above with her mark
concerning the birth of her son, David Scalf and this David, in my opinion, was
David (Dave) Scalf who married Susannah Smalling and whose father was David S.
Scalf. It is also my opinion that
David S. Scalf, the father of both David (Dave) and Benjamin (Ben) had died
before the 1860 census was enumerated and was last found in the home of Levi
Taylor and Sarah Scalf Taylor in 1850.
Who
was the Nancy on in the home of Levi Taylor with David in 1850?
A study of the original microfilm of that census reveals that the name
was in fact, Nancy. This is also
listed on the website at (Scalf Family).
If
this Nancy was David’s wife, then why was she listed as Mary on the 1860
Sullivan County, Tennessee census and why did she sign Mary to the oath
concerning the birth date of her son David in 1864?
Several theories can evolve from this.
The first theory would be that David married twice and that Nancy (in the
home of Levi Taylor) in 1850 was his second wife and his first wife, Mary, was
living with their son, Benjamin.
Possibly,
David S. Scalf and Mary divorced and David S. Scalf had remarried by the 1850
census. I doubt this because David was living in the home of his
daughter, Sarah Scalf Taylor in 1850. Not
that it would have been impossible that his daughter would have taken him in
with a new wife, but not likely.
Most
likely, Sarah would have remained loyal to her mother, Mary, and would not have
allowed this. One would think that if this were the case, then Mary would
have gone to live with her daughter and David S. Scalf and his new wife, Nancy,
would have possibly gone to live with a son.
I
think it is quite possible that due to their ages, both Mary and David needed
care. However, due to the hardships
of the times, the daughter, Sarah Scalf Taylor, took her father in and her
brother, Benjamin, took their mother in because neither family was able to care
for both parents at once. This may
not be what happened, but this did happen during those times.
However, we still do not know who this Nancy Scalf in the home of Levi
and Sarah Scalf Taylor, along with David S. Scalf was.
Recall
that Nancy was about 19 years younger than David S. Scalf if the census was
correct. This Nancy would have been
born around 1791 if the census is correct and we have to allow for the fact that
they usually were not. Allowing for
that, I doubt that she was born very much earlier, if any, and could very well
have been a daughter of David or she could also have been another relative of
the Scalf family.
It
is quite possible that this Nancy was a Scalf only by marriage to another
relative. Another thing to remember
is that Benjamin Scalf, the brother of David S. Scalf also lived in this area
and had a large family. This Nancy
could have been from his family and would have been a cousin to Sarah Scalf
Taylor and simply living in the home of her cousin.
There are a number of possibilities that can be speculated on concerning
this and none that can be absolutely settled on without further records to sort
this out.
In
conclusion, I think the records reveal enough support to the theory that Mary
Scalf was the wife of David S. Scalf. Whether
or not she was his first wife, or his only wife, I do feel she was his wife and
that David S. Scalf died between the enumeration of the 1850 and 1860 censuses
and his son, Benjamin (Ben) Scalf cared for his widow, Mary, until her death.
I have not seen Mary on a census after 1860 and it is possible she died
between 1864 after she signed the oath concerning her son’s birth date and
1870, or possibly even lived until 1880.
Further
research is needed to eliminate or confirm this.
A will of David S. Scalf would be very helpful in determining this if one
could be found. I have searched the
Carter County records for this, but without success.
At the time of my search, I did not know that the name was spelled so
many various ways and it is possible there is a will, but it may be listed under
a misspelling of the name and it has not been recognized.

I next find this family on the 1870 census of Sullivan County and the Post Office was Union Depot in district 16. It should be noted here that the 1870 census was very hard to read and the transcriber of that microfilm (in my opinion) made a mistake in deciphering the name. The name is listed as Daniel, but in all probability it was David. Some of the same children are listed on the 1870 census as was on the 1860 census and David had the same wife. Although, I believe the name to be David, I have listed it as Daniel as the census shows.

It is interesting that David (Dave) states he was born in North Carolina on this census, but on the previous census, he states Tennessee. This could also be a transcribing error or David (Dave) may have forgotten on the first one.
All of the census records will not be presented for each member of the family, however, I will try to present the ones that were needed to assist me in arriving at my conclusions concerning the descendants of this line and hopefully solve a puzzle or two for researchers searching these lines. I will begin with the puzzle of Mary E. and Sarah E. Scalf. I will then list what is known of Nancy and the other remaining children that lived.
Diane McGreevy, a great-great-granddaughter of Sarah E. Scalf has supplied us with documentation to the full name of Sarah E. Scalf. In Diane’s baby book, her mother had written Diane’s great-great-grandmother’s name as Sarah Elizabeth Scalf. Diane states that Sarah died in the Spring of 1948. Sarah would have been around 83 or 84 years old when she died according to the estimation of her birth from the census records.
In view of this information, we now know that Sarah E. Scalf and her sister, Mary E. Scalf were both named Elizabeth. This may explain why Mary Elizabeth used the name “Lizzie” on the 1900 and 1910 census of Carter County, Tennessee. We might assume that the census enumerator used the name in order to keep the two names separate since they lived in the same neighborhood. However, it would only be an assumption because it can also be assumed that Mary Elizabeth used the name “Lizzie” for the same purpose.
It was a common practice of the day to use something to distinguish two people living in the same community with the same first and last names. This was often done when two men lived in the same neighborhood and carried the same first and last name, such as John Sr. and John Jr. They did not have to be father and son to be referred to as senior or junior. They simply had to carry the same names. Often an uncle with the name John was referred to as senior if he had a nephew named John living in the same community.
I have found instances where females were treated in the same fashion if there was an older female and a younger female living near each other with the same first and last names. Both of these girls had the middle name, Elizabeth, and may have been known to their neighbors by their middle names instead of their first names so this may be why the name “Lizzie” was used on the census. The census enumerators were usually people who lived in the same community as well, and this enumerator probably knew both of these women. Many assumptions can be suggested concerning this, but the important thing is we now have enough supporting evidence to say that both of these girls were named Elizabeth.
With the information provided from the census records concerning Mary E. Scalf and information from Diane concerning Sarah E. Scalf, it is my opinion that both of these girls were named Elizabeth. This can cause difficulties for researchers of these two families. The early records will not always reflect which Elizabeth the record is written about. The name "Lizzie" may not always be listed on the record to determine if the record found concerns Mary Elizabeth . Therefore, caution should be used in researching these families where the name is listed on records only as Elizabeth. There are also other Scalf females in the Carter/Washington and Sullivan County areas named Elizabeth as well. A very careful study of other information only will determine which Elizabeth the record concerns.
David (Dave) Scalf and family show up on the 1880 census of Carter County, Tennessee in the 8th district, enumerated on June 23, 1880. Sarah is still in the home here, but Mary E. is now gone.
| SCALF, | David | 60 | (b) NC | estimated birth | 1820 | Parents NC |

| Sarah | 15 | (b) TN | " | 1865 | daughter | |
| William | 13 | (b) TN | " | 1867 | son |
Please remember that the 1900 census shows the age, the birth month and year. Sometimes the person giving the information did not count the years accurately and sometimes the enumerator did the figuring and did not figure correctly. That is often the reason for the age variance on this census compared to the others. The other census records did not list the birth month or year, only the age.
On the census below, Susannah is now listed as Susan and has daughter, Sarah E. in the home. Her birth date is stated here as 1865. This is the 1900 census and this is what was told to the enumerator. I have not estimated this. My estimation of birth dates are done with the other census records but not the 1900 census for it is always stated on this census. I have often found that sometimes on the 1900 census, the birth date will be stated very much different than an estimation of the age.

Going back just a moment to the 1880 census, I will list the family of Mary Elizabeth and show
the relationship here. Recall that David (Dave) and Susannah had a daughter Mary E. listed on
the 1860 and 1870 Sullivan County, Tennessee census. Mary E. was born about 1848 on the
1860 census and about 1849 on the 1870 census. From the 1880 census in the 8th district ,
enumerated on June 23, 1880 is the following family:
| SCALF, | Elizabeth | 32 |
est'd birth 1848 |
Father (b) NC--Mother TN |
| William | 8 | " 1872 | ||
| Robert | 4 | " 1876 | ||
| Caldonia | 1 | " 1879 |
I feel very certain that this Elizabeth is Mary Elizabeth, the sister of the Sarah E. above and they were the daughters of David (David) and Susannah (Susan) Smalling Scalf. Note that on this census, Elizabeth states her age as 32 and her birth is estimated to be about 1848. Looking at the 1860 census in her father's home, she is age, 12 and her birth is estimated at 1848. Again, in 1870 her age is listed as 21 and born in 1849. Only one years difference both ways. Then, by 1880, she is now 32 and born again in 1848.
However, by 1900 she is 61 and born in 1839, which would lead one to believe this is not the same person. Either Elizabeth, or the enumerator did not figure the years correctly on the 1900 census.
Regardless of this, I believe that she is the same person because the son, Robert, is in the home and daughter, Callie, which would most likely be Caldonia on the 1880 census. Robert's age is stated as 20 here. His age was stated as 4 years old in 1880 census and should be 24 in 1900.
Again, due to the times, I don't feel this is a major difference in what was stated in 1880 when his age was most likely stated more accurately than at a later date. William is gone from the home in 1900 and Elizabeth (Lizzie) now has three more children. Callie's age and birth date corresponds to the 1880 census where she is listed as Caldonia.

Going to the 1910 Carter County, Tennessee census, Lizzie is listed again with daughter, Susan, who is now 27 years old and born about 1883. This same Susan appeared in the 1900 census at age 17 and born 1883, so the 10 years between the censuses would calculate 27 years old and again, confirms this to be the same family. The grandchild Bessie, daughter of Sarah, is again found in the home in 1910. David is gone by now and has most likely married.

estimated birth 1846 |
| Susan | 27 | " 1883 | |
| Bessie | 10 | " 1900 granddaughter | |
| Chester | 2 | " 1908 grandson |
As can be seen above, Bessie was Lizzie's granddaughter and Chester was her grandson. Another clue, although not greatly significant, is the fact that Lizzie's daughter was named Susan and was most likely named for her grandmother, Susannah.
On the 1900 census of Carter County, Tennessee Susan (Susannah) wife of David (Dave), son of David S. Scalf, listed that she had 10 children with 5 living. On the 1860 census of Sullivan County, David (Dave) and Susannah have seven children and by the time of the 1870 Sullivan County census, three more have been born. This is a total of 10 children.
I have no way of knowing what might have happened to the five children that died but I have assumed it was due to the epidemic that came through Carter County in 1873. The area of Carter and Sullivan join in the area where these Scalf families lived. I'm sure Sullivan County experienced some of this epidemic. This is merely speculation by me on the cause of death for these children and should not be used as fact for I have found no death records to support this.
Nancy Jane Scalf was the oldest child of David (Dave) and Susannah Smalling Scalf. Although,
I have not learned a great deal about this family I will list them here as I have compiled them
from the census records and notes of interviews from the Scalf Family website.

The next family is Sarah E. Scalf who has been discussed above. This compilation of the children of Sarah E. Scalf was confirmed by the wife of descendant of Donna Jane Scalf and Diane McGreevy, a descendant of Maggie P. Scalf, sister of Donna Jane. Information from Diane McGreevy, relates that this Sarah E. was known to the family as Sarah Elizabeth Scalf. I have listed the 1900 census again to show this Sarah E. in the home of her mother, Susan (Susannah). Sarah has children Mamie/Mamy B., Eva (Ena?) and what appears to be Dennie or Jennie. I later found out from Nancy, the wife of a descendant that this name should have been Donna Jane Scalf. Diane McGreevy confirms this in an email correspondence to Bob Scalf of Knoxville, Tennessee.
1900 Carter County, Tennessee--district 13
| SCALF, | Susan | 70 | (b) 1829--10 children with 5 living |
| Sarah E. | 34 | (b) 1865 | |
| Mamy B. | 8 | (b) 1892 | |
| Eva or Ena | 4 | (b) 1896 | |
| Dennie? Jennie? | 11 mo. | (b) 1899 |
Sarah is again found on the 1910 census and Mamie/Mamy has married to James Gray at this
time. The name Donna Jane still appears to be Jennie, however, it should have been Donna.
1910 Carter County, Tennessee census:
| SCALF, | Sarah | 38 | (b)1862 | |
| Texanna | 13 | (b) 1897 | daughter | |
| Jennie ? | 8 | (b) 1902 | daughter | |
| Maggie P. | 6 | (b) 1904 | daughter | |
| GRAY, | James | 19 | (b) 1891 | son-in-law |
| Mamie | 18 | (b) 1892 | daughter |
I believe this Sarah to be the Sarah in the previous census listed as Sarah E. Scalf. The children's
names confirm this. She also appears to be the same Sarah E. listed on the earlier censuses as the
daughter of David (Dave) Scalf and Susannah Smalling. The following email messages from
Diane McGreevy to Bob Scalf of Knoxville, confirms that this was the daughter of David (Dave)
and Susannah Smalling Scalf.
November 24, 2000:
Margaret and William had four daughters. Ruth, Evelyn, Billie (my mother) and Anne. Ruth and Anne still live in Elizabethton. My mother ,Billie, married Doran Dolan from Shell Creek TN. They moved to Dayton, Oh and my dad worked for General Motors. I was born here in Dayton in Dec. 47 .
November 26, 2000:
My Sarah Elizabeth Scalf b. 1866 d. Spring 1948. Both in Elizabethton TN. She was the daughter of David Scalf and Susan Smalling. Nancy Jane, Solomon, and William were her brothers and sisters. There may have been more but that is all that my mom remembers. She did not know Nancy Jane but her grandmother talked about her sister , Jane being a midwife. She visited Bud (Solomon). I do not know the rest of her brothers and sisters. She may have been called Elizabeth and had another sister named Sarah. We only knew her as Mammy and that her name was Sarah Elizabeth. so as I said I am confused about the Sarahs and Elizabeths.

Son of David (Dave) Scalf and Susannah Smalling
Mrs. Dorothy Scalf Depew was the granddaughter of William McKinnley Scalf and Mary Elizabeth Smallwood. From my notes of a telephone conversation with Dorothy in 1987, she stated that her mother was Mary Jane Smallwood who married her father, William McKinnley Scalf. William McKinnley was known to the family as Mac. Mac died from a heart attack while loading a truck in Kingsport in 1934.
After Mac's death, Mary Jane remarried to Clarence Bear in Scott County, VA. This marriage can be found in the marriages of Scott County, VA at Gate City Courthouse. Mary was listed as a widow, age 32 and her parents listed as Fannie Smallwood. Clarence was listed as 21 and his parents were J. B. and Blammie.
Dorothy stated that her grandmother was also a Smallwood, but she did not know her first name, and that her father McKinnley (Mac) had been named for his father, William McKinnley Scalf.
Dorothy then stated the names of Mac's brother and sister as John Scalf who married Lula and Cora Scalf. She did not know Lula's maiden name and she did not know who Cora married. She named John's son as Claude Scalf and Claude's son as Dale Scalf who lived at Fall Branch at that time. She also stated that John and Lula had two daughters, Bessie and Rosie. These girls are also found in the marriage records of Scott County, VA.
Dorothy stated that her father McKinnley Scalf (Mac) and Mary Jane Smallwood only had two children, herself and a brother, Arthur Scalf. Arthur married Reba Hite. Dorothy provided this information along with the birth and death dates as she knew them and the burial sites.
With this information, I checked the 1900 census of Sullivan County and found that a William McKinnley Scalf and wife, Mary, were found in the 12th district with children, John W., Cora, and William. McKinnley. John and Cora were listed as 12 and 11 and William McKinnley was listed as 3. This would put his birth around 1896 and was most likely close to correct.
I then checked the Sullivan County marriages and found a William Scalf to Elizabeth Smallwood on October 16, 1887. Dorothy had stated to me that her mother was a Smallwood and her grandmother also was a Smallwood, but she did not know the relation. This explained my earlier confusion on the two William's and the wives. The first William on the 1900 census had a wife, Mary. This was the father of Mac. This Mary apparently was Mary Elizabeth Smallwood found in the Sullivan County marriages. Her name had been listed as Mary on the census and Elizabeth on the marriage record.
I found the other Mary Smallwood Scalf married to Clarence Bear in Scott County but the dates were too different for them to be the same person. However, this Mary stated her name as Mary Jane Smallwood. Both women were named Mary and both women had husbands named William McKinnley, but obviously from two separate generations. The relationships of these two women are yet unknown. This Mary Smallwood who married Clarence Bear second, was the first wife of Mac (McKinnley) Scalf, father of Dorothy Scalf Depew.
More information connecting these families together was received from Nancy Smallwood Trent, great-granddaughter of David (Dave) Scalf and Susannah Smalling Scalf..

For descendants interested in finding the information concerning this, it might be difficult to obtain. However, a check with the collateral lines may reveal more information on this family. I have found that to be a good avenue for research in the past. Often, the collateral lines may have more documented evidence through the collateral lines than can be found on our own. I have often searched wills, deeds, court minutes, etc., of the collateral lines and found enough information to support some of my theories.
Note to the descendants of David (Dave) Scalf: If the final resting place of David (Dave) Scalf can be found with reasonable evidence to support the fact, the government will issue a marker for David (Dave) due to his military service.
Information concerning this line has been contributed by Bob Scalf of Knoxville, Tennessee,
correspondence of Diane McGreevy, correspondence of Nancy Smallowood Trent and the wife
of a descendant of this line, along with a compilation and analysis of the Carter and Sullivan
County, Tennessee census records.
