MISCELLANEOUS
SCALF FAMILIES
East Tennessee—Iillinois—Iowa
(Possible
Lines of Benjamin Scalf Sr. or David S. Scalf)
This chapter will cover the various families that appear to descend from either David S. Scalf or Benjamin Scalf Sr. As previously stated, it is difficult to determine which line these folks may belong to and I have placed them in separate chapters for this reason. There are a number of families in the Carter/Washington County, Tennessee area, as well as the McDonough County, Illinois area that could have been children of either Benjamin Scalf Sr. or David S. Scalf.
The Isaac Scalf family of Collin County, Texas was found in Van Buren and Appanoose County, Iowa before their move to Collin County, Texas between 1850-1855. It would seem logical that this family might have had some connection to the other Scalf families in the Iowa area, as well. However, there may not have been any connection at all. Although Elmer Scalf and Henry Scalf placed this Isaac as the son of John Scalf Jr. in the previous books, I have chosen to list Isaac as one of the miscellaneous families.
Isaac may very well have been a son of John Scalf Jr. and Martha “Patsy” Counts. I have no way of knowing what evidence might have been found by Elsie Payne Archer and Henry Scalf during the writing of Chronicles of the Scalf Family and there might have been evidence that did not make it into the book concerning this family. Elsie and Henry are both deceased and we are not able to ask them about this.
However, in a correspondence with Elmer Scalf, author of Scalf Family History, Elmer stated he had no documentation or confirmation concerning the placement of Isaac as the son of John Scalf Jr. Due to the lack of names on the earlier census records from 1790-1850, it is difficult to confirm any of the folks born before 1840. Most of these children have left home by the time the 1850 census was enumerated and have families of their own. Unless there are other records that tie these families together or can supply some supporting evidence, one cannot say with a reasonable amount of certainty who their parents were.
I have found no confirmation, supporting evidence, or documentation that Isaac was the son of John Scalf Jr. at this time. Due to this fact, I think it best to wait until some stronger evidence or documentation can place this Isaac Scalf in the proper line. There was some of the family of Ira Scalf that migrated to Evansville, Indiana and into Missouri, so it is possible that some of these families could trace back to Ira Scalf, as well. I have found no indication that any of these folks are connected to the line of Ira Scalf at this time, but anything is possible in researching family history.
The following family of Isaac Scalf and Sarah Jane Smith is contributed with help from Scalf Family History, Chronicles of the Scalf Family, the 1850 Appanoose County, Iowa census, marriages of Van Buren County, Iowa, Glenda Mounger, Mary Beckham and Carol Waldroup, descendants of this line.

The following names are folks in the Carter/Washington County, Tennessee area that have not been placed with certainty. Malinda Scalf Cash; Mahala Scalf Moon Moore, and Elizabeth Scalf. There is also a William Scalf that I will discuss later. It appears that he may be the son of David S. Scalf.
The names of the families of McDonough County, Illinois that have not been placed and appear to have connections back to the Carter/Washington County, Tennessee area are Jonah Scalf; Rebecca Scalf Hankle/Hinkle; Joanna Scalf Maine, and John Francis Scalf of Peoria, Indiana. There may have been two other sisters, Phebe and Elizabeth Scalf. I have listed the name, Hankle as Hankle/Hinkle due to the fact that there are many Hinkle families in the Carter/Washington/Sullivan County, Tennessee area. The name may have been Hankle, but the spelling of Hinkle appears more often in the East Tennessee area.
If David and Benjamin did remarry after the deaths of their first wives, the names of the second wives and the approximate dates of marriage would need to be found to be able to determine which one of these brothers these children belonged to if in fact they did belong to one of them. We know that David S. and Nancy Scalf were living in the home of Levi Taylor in 1850 in Carter County, Tennessee and we know that it was stated on the census that Nancy married in 1810. Nancy was listed as 59 years old and from the census it appears she was married to David S. Scalf.
If we analyze the ages of the folks we find the following:
Malinda was born about 1814.
Phebe Scalf who married John Cave in Illinois was born about
1816.
Jonah Scalf was born about 1822-1827.
Rebecca Scalf was born 1823.
John Francis Scalf was born 1839-1841
I have nothing to suggest when Joanna, Mahala, and Elizabeth who married Maranda White may have been born.
Fact #1: All of these folks are found in areas near each other (McDonough County, IL) with the exception of Malinda Scalf Cash and Mahala Scalf Moon Moore.
Fact #2: It was stated in papers of the family of Barbara Bowman that Jonah had sisters, Rebecca and Joanna and her grandmother states that John Francis was a brother to Jonah.
Fact #3: Mrs. Roy Scalf states in her letters that the children of Maranda (Ran) White and Elizabeth Scalf were raised by James Hinkle/Hankle and Rebecca Scalf according to information she received from a Hinkle/Hankle descendant. It was stated that Rebecca Scalf and James V. Hankle/Hinkle moved to Illinois during the 1860s.
Fact #4: The family of John Cave and Phebe (Feby) who was born in Tennessee is living in McDonough County, Illinois in 1850 along with other Scalf family members. Maranda Dixon/Dickson was married to John Wesley Scalf at the home of John Cave. Maranda’s mother was Phebe who married John Cave. This was stated in the letter of Mrs. Roy Scalf. It was also stated in this letter that another relative told Mrs. Roy Scalf that Maranda Dixon/Dickson and John Wesley Scalf were related. This John Wesley Scalf was the son of John Scalf of Putnam County, Missouri and his first wife, Malinda Wood. The evidence suggests that John was a son of Benjamin Scalf Sr.
Fact #5: Barbara Bowman has papers in her possession that lists the birth of a Phebe Hankle/Hinkle and Wesley Hankle/Hinkle. These may, or may not, be the children of Rebecca Scalf and James Hankle/Hinkle and could have been the children of Maranda and Elizabeth Scalf White according to Mrs. Roy Scalf. It is also listed in the papers that a Joanna Jackson died in 1876.
It should be noted that on the death certificate of John Francis Scalf, it was stated that his father was John Scalf and that John Francis Scalf was born in Virginia. It is also thought that Jonah was the son of John Scalf and Temperence Wiley of North Carolina. (Scalf Family History). These things need to be taken into consideration when researching these families.
If Malinda and Mahala were daughters of Benjamin Sr., they chose to remain in the Tennessee area and did not move to Illinois with the other members of the family. They may have possibly been older children by Ceely Ann and Benjamin. They could just as easily have been the children of David S. Scalf since they did remain in Tennessee.
All of the children have births very close together except for John Francis Scalf. To help narrow this scenario down, all of these folks are born after 1810 when David S. Scalf allegedly married Nancy. In estimation from the available information, it appears that Benjamin Scalf Sr. may have remarried between the years of 1820-1830, and this fact could indicate that any of these folks born after 1820 may have been children by a second wife of Benjamin Sr. It is believed that David S. Scalf married Nancy in 1810. Therefore, the children born after 1810 could have been the children of David and Nancy with the exception of John of Putnam County, Missouri, Lewis of McDonough County, Illinois and Benjamin Jr. of Elkhart, Indiana. I fell certain that there is enough supporting evidence to conclude that these three men were the sons of Benjamin Scalf Sr. and his first wife, Ceely Ann Koziah.
Jonah, John Francis, Rebecca, Joanna and Phebe are all in the Illinois area where Benjamin Sr. is first found in McDonough County, Illinois after leaving Tennessee. Lewis Scalf of Washington County, Tennessee was born before 1810 and therefore, could not have been a son of David S. Scalf and a second wife, nor he could he have been a son of Benjamin Sr. and a second wife due to his birth date.
John of Putnam County, Missouri was certainly not a son of David S. and a second wife for he would not have left home due to differences with his stepmother since he was born in 1815 after the marriage of David and Nancy if in fact Nancy was David’s second wife. He also would not have been a son of Benjamin Sr. and a second wife if Benjamin remarried between 1820-1830.
Benjamin Jr. was born before Benjamin Sr. would have remarried and would not have been a son of his second wife and the Benjamin mentioned by Mrs. Rhoda Motychak as being the son of David S. Scalf is living in Sullivan County, Tennessee and by this we know that Benjamin of Elkhart, Indiana was not a son of David S. Scalf.
There is a William Scalf in the home of George Crouch on the 1850 Washington County, Tennessee census. Recalling that Brittan Scalf married Talitha Couch of Russell County, Va, this could be some of the Couch family living in the Washington County, Tennessee area. The name may have been Couch instead of Crouch on the census (possible transcribing error?) I have not researched this and further research might provide the answer to whether or not this might be a son of Brittan and Talitha.
One indication that some of the John Scalf Sr. line was living near the families of Benjamin and David S. Scalf, is the fact that Berryman Scalf, son of John Scalf Sr., was living in Washington County, Tennessee and was married there.
The Feby (Phebe) wife of John Cave in McDonough County, Illinois in 1850 was born about 1816 and was living near the Wiley and Shaw families in McDonough County. The family of James (Jonah?) Scalf and his wife, Elizabeth Wiley were living nearby as well. This Feby (Phebe) was born in Tennessee according to this census.
The family of John Francis Scalf is very difficult to place, as well as Jonah. John Francis Scalf is the ancestor of Barbara Bowman and is reported to have been born around 1837-1841. If John Francis Scalf was born before 1840, he may have been the last child of Benjamin Sr. and his second wife before she died. A wife is not listed on the 1840 census with Benjamin Sr. in Illinois; therefore, if he was born after 1840, he would not have been the son of a second wife and might not belong in this line.
It appears that John of Putnam County, Missouri may have
been the first of this family to leave the East Tennessee area and likely, his
siblings and/or half-siblings followed, as well as his father after the death
of his second wife. She may have died en-route to Indiana or Illinois, or after
they arrived.
REBECCA SCALF AND JAMES HANKLE/HINKLE
It is my opinion that this Rebecca is the same Rebecca living in the home of Nate (Nathaniel) Cash on the1850 census of Carter County, Tennessee. Rebecca would have been born in 1825 according to this census. Barbara Bowman’s record states that Rebecca Scalf Hankle/Hinkle was born June 18, 1823 in East Tennessee.
A Rebecca Scalf did marry James V. Hankle/Hinkle in Washington County, Tennessee on September 12, 1850 according to the marriages of Washington County, Tennessee. William L. Cash was listed as the Bondsman. (See marriages of Washington Co. TN). This is most likely William L. Cash, husband of Malinda Scalf. William L. Cash is a relative of some nature to Nate (Nathaniel) Cash but the exact relationship has not been identified. In all likelihood, the Rebecca in the home of Nate Cash in 1850 is the same Rebecca who married James Valentine Hankle/Hinkle in Washington County, Tennessee.
Barbara Bowman gave the birth dates for the children of James Hinkle and Rebecca Scalf, as well as the marriage of Phebe Tennessee and Mary Hankle/Hinkle, daughters of James and Rebecca Scalf Hankle/Hinkle
The only reference I have for the children of Elizabeth Scalf and Maranda White is the statement made by Mrs. Roy Scalf concerning the children being raised by Rebecca Scalf and James Hankle/Hinkle.
From Barbara Bowman’s records, it is listed that a Joanna Jackson died on October 14, 1876. There is no reference as to who this Joanna might have been or when she was born. There is no reference as to where she died either. Other information suggests that a Joanna/Johanna married Frank Maine and lived in Illinois, but no county is mentioned. There might have been two marriages for Joanna and they may have been the same person. She may have been the sister of Jonah as stated in Barbara’s records.
In a letter dated January 29, 1984 from Catherine Scalf to Jean Grier concerning the family of Jonah Scalf of Illinois, Catherine states that James Hankle's g-granddaughter was born and grew up in the same area of Illinois.
She also states that James and Rebecca Scalf Hankle married in Tennessee and moved to Fulton Co. IL in the 1860s. She goes on to say that they brought with them children of Ran (Miranda) White and Elizabeth Scalf who were killed by Indians. James and Rebecca raised the two White children and their names were, Phebe and Wesley White. Rebecca Scalf Hankle died and James remarried and took in several children to raise. Jonah Scalf married several times in McDonough County and Fulton County, Illinois.
This is a quote from Catherine’s letter, "So perhaps Elizabeth was a sister to Rebecca who they think was a sister to Jonah Scalf who was gr. grandfather of Raymond Wilcoxen of Canton, IL."
FAMILY OF
REBECCA SCALF
And
JAMES
VALENTINE HANKLE/HINKLE
REBECCA2 SCALF (BENJAMIN (SR)1) was born June 18, 1823 in East TN. She married JAMES VALENTINE HANKLE September 12, 1850 in Washington County, TN. He was born December 13, 1827 in East TN.
The children of Rebecca and James is from a Bible record of a descendant and records from Barbara Bowman.
Children of REBECCA SCALF and JAMES HANKLE are:
i. MARY LUCINDA3 HANKLE, b. September 24, 1854; m. THOMAS LICKES, May 11, 1872.
ii. PHEBE TENNESSEE HANKLE, b. July 25, 1861; m. ALBERT BOROMAN, December 25, 1876.
iii. WESTLY HANKLE, b. May 05, 1863.
iv. JOHN FRANKLIN HANKLE, b. March 11, 1866.
JONAH SCALF
1825-1894
It is reported by Barbara’s grandmother that Jonah Scalf was a brother to John Francis Scalf. It cannot be said with certainty that Jonah and John F. were children of Benjamin Sr., and are listed in the miscellaneous families until further research can determine their correct positions.
The Illinois marriage records show that Jonah Scalf married five times in Illinois in the McDonough and Fulton County area. His name was spelled Jinah and Jonas, as well as Jonah. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Wiley on December 4, 1845 in McDonough County, IL. (Marriage Book A, page 167, license # 570). After the death of Elizabeth, Jonah married Mrs. Olive Elizabeth Rice on September 2, 1855 in McDonough County, IL. (Marriage Book ?, license #587). Jonah then married Samantha Ann Lane on January 15, 1862 in Fulton County, IL. (License # 15). This marriage only lasted for a few years and Jonah married Jane Wiley on 12/29/1865 in Fulton County, Illinois. Jane was a half-sister to his first wife, Elizabeth Wiley (Marriage Book D, page 66, license # 326). Jonah's last marriage was to Mrs. Martha Canevit on July 28, 1871 Fulton County, IL. (Marriage Book D, page 181, license #178). (See Illinois marriages).
A James Scalf and Elizabeth are found on the 1850 McDonough County, Illinois census. This transcribed census was enumerated on October 9, 1850 and lists a James Calf, age 24, born in Tennessee. His estimated birth date would be 1826. Elizabeth, (spelled Elisabeth) on the census was age, 22 and born in Ohio. Barbara Bowman looked at the microfilm of this census and reports that the name James could also have been Jonah and might have been transcribed incorrectly. This James and Elisabeth had a son, John, 10 months old and born in Illinois. As related by Barbara, Jonah had three sons by his first wife, Elizabeth Wiley Scalf. These children were: John W., William E. and a son that died at birth. Elizabeth died in childbirth to this son around 1855. Elizabeth surely died early in the year of 1855 for Jonah remarried by September of 1855 to Mrs. Olive Elizabeth Rice.
Another indication that this may have been Jonah on the 1850 McDonough County, Illinois census listed as James Calf, is the fact that living nearby is a large number of the Wiley family. Jonah's first wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of John Wiley and Mary Shaw. Mary Shaw Wiley had died by 1850 and John Wiley and his second wife, Nancy Smedley are living nearby. John Cave and wife Feby and family are also living nearby. Phebe is spelled Feby on the census and she was listed as 34 years old and born in Tennessee. John Cave was 33 and born in England. Feby’s birth date would be estimated at 1816.
There is a Noble family living next door to John and Phebe and an elderly John Cave, age 76 is living in the home of the Noble family. The wife of the Noble is also listed as being born in England and from speculation; I am assuming this could have been a sister to the younger John Cave, husband of Feby. This elderly John, in the home of the Noble family, was also born in England and was most likely the father of John Cave who married Feby. The Shaw family is also living nearby and this appears to be the family of Mary Shaw, mother of Elizabeth Wiley, who married Jonah Scalf.
John Francis Scalf is reported to have been born around 1837-1841. If this is correct, he may possibly have been the last child of Benjamin Scalf Sr. and a second wife. Jonah's estimated birth was around 1822-1825. Barbara has a birth date for Jonah of 1824-25 or thereabouts.
Going back to the 1840 census of McDonough County, Illinois, Benjamin Sr. has a son at home listed as 10-15 years old that would have been born around 1825-1830. This could have been Jonah. Barbara also has in her possession a record of the names of the family of Jonah Scalf, which appear to trace back to Carter/Washington County, Tennessee. Another researcher with names that coincide with Barbara's records also confirmed this information. The researcher's grandfather had written down the names of these family members.
There was a migration of the Washington/Carter County families to the Indiana/Illinois/Missouri area around 1835-1840 and some as early as 1820-1830. Some of these families had marital connections to our Scalf family and can be found in the various counties of North Carolina before they entered Washington, Carter and Sullivan County, Tennessee. The family of Jonah Scalf is listed below with as much certainty as can be relied on with the evidence. Barbara Bowman has contributed much to this information, as well as others such as, Vicki Dalton, another descendant of this line and Cindy Foster, a Wiley/Stufflebeam descendant.
Jonah and Elizabeth lived in Iowa for a short period where Elizabeth and their last child died.
An email message from Barbara Bowman dated August 14, 2001.
"On Jonah in Fulton, IL 1860 I found Jonah, age 33, a farmer with real estate valued at $300, b in TN living with John, age 11 and William, age 8, both b in IL. Of course Elisabeth, Jonah's wife, had died in childbirth in Iowa and so had their third child. He apparently had not remarried yet.”
Actually, Jonah had remarried by 1860 for the marriage records of Illinois show that Jonah married Mrs. Olive Elizabeth Rice by September of 1855.
Roy V. Scalf of Canton, Illinois stated that Jonah lived along the Cedar Creek in Iowa. I have been told that descendants still live there.
Elizabeth Wiley Scalf is reported to have been buried in Iowa. Elmer Scalf states in a letter to me that Elizabeth Wiley and Minerva Wiley were sisters. Minerva Wiley was Minerva Jane Wiley. Jonah married Minerva Jane Wiley, daughter of John Wiley and Nancy Smedley in 1865 in Fulton County, Illinois. Minerva Jane Wiley was a half-sister to Elizabeth Wiley.

(Chronicles of the Scalf Family Chapter XIV, Miscellaneous Scalf Families, Jonas Scalf of Fulton County, Illinois).

WILLIAM
E. SCALF
Son
of Jonah Scalf and Elizabeth Wiley
William E. Scalf is stated to have been a Free Methodist Minister, in the Illinois/Iowa area. Below are excerpts from Chronicles of the Scalf Family concerning William E. Scalf.
"William E. Scalf, son of Jonas, is found on the 1880 Census of Fulton County. He was listed as 28 years of age. His father was born in Tennessee, his mother in Illinois. His wife, Laura, was 23 years old, her father a native of Wisconsin, her mother of Illinois. Children were Minnie, 7, Leona, 5, and Bertha B., 3. Rev. William E. was a Free Methodist minister for 50 years, serving in Illinois and Iowa.
William E. moved to Iowa about 1890 where he remarried to Esther Smelser/Smeltzer, a native of Illinois. There is no available date as to the year his first wife, Laura. died. lt is thought that he remarried in Iowa and not in Illinois. However, the marriages of Fulton Co. Illinois show that he and Esther/Ester were married in Fulton County, Illinois (See Illinois marriages). William and Esther had one child, born Nov. 1890, in Iowa. William Scalf moved with his wife, Esther, and daughter, Cassie, to Covina, California, in 1895.
“According to California records of births and deaths, William E. Scalf's wife, Esther, was born Nov. 7, 1862 in Illinois and died at Covina, California, Dec. 31, 1908. Her father was listed as James O. Smelser, native of Kentucky, and her mother, Malissa Robertson, a native of Illinois. Esther Scalf lies buried at Covina. Two months after the death of Esther, her daughter Cassie died. The date is Feb. 27, 1908. William E. Scalf survived his second wife until March 28, 1930, dying at the age of 78 years. The records show he was born Jan. 24, 1852, in Illinois. He had been a resident of Covina for six years, in California 35 years” (Chronicles of the Scalf Family--Chapter XIV).
In a letter written to me from Elmer Scalf, he states that he found the graves of Esther and Cassie while living in California.

JOHN
FRANCIS SCALF
1839-1925
This chapter will cover what is known about John Francis Scalf of Illinois. John Francis is said to have been a brother of Jonah Scalf. However, we have been unable to confirm this with documentation at this time. I have listed John F. as Jonah's brother because the grandmother of Barbara Bowman states that they were brothers. There seems to be a considerable amount of years between their births, but I'm sure that she would have known who her grandfather’s family was.
The exact parentage of Jonah Scalf and John Francis Scalf is not clear. Elmer Scalf believed them to be sons of John Scalf and Temperence Wiley of Halifax County, North Carolina. I cannot confirm or deny this at this time and they may very well have been. However, it is reported that Jonah had a sister Rebecca who married James Valentine Hankle/Hinkle in Carter County, Tennessee. If this is correct, then this indicates that these folks were from Carter County, Tennessee.
Possibly, the birth dates of both Jonah and John Francis Scalf are off and they may have been born closer together than records indicate. Although there is no confirming evidence at this time that Jonah and John Francis were sons of Benjamin Sr., other evidence seems to suggest that they were.
These two men were in the Illinois and Iowa area along with other family members that appear to belong to the Benjamin Scalf Sr. line. It is stated in Chronicles of the Scalf Family and Scalf Family History that at least Jonah was possibly from the John Scalf line of Halifax County, North Carolina. However, I have found no evidence that he was. There seems to be more evidence that he was from Benjamin's line but I could be wrong and any information to confirm or deny this is certainly welcome. Any, and all help on this line of the family would be greatly appreciated.
John Francis Scalf stated that he was born in Virginia on several different records. His second wife, Mary Helen Ferguson also stated this on his death record. It has also been stated that he was born in Evansville, Indiana. Due to this statement, it should be noted that some of the Ira Scalf line was living in Evansville, Indiana for a time, and further research could prove a link to the Ira Scalf line as well.
John Francis Scalf married Sarah Ellen Millison on October 22, 1872 in Peoria, Illinois by W. C. Kneff. (See marriages of Illinois and marriage license on website). Fourteen months later, Sarah Ellen Millison Scalf died. According to a newspaper account, she died in December of 1873. It is unknown if the son lived or not as no records have been found concerning him. There was no mention of the death of this son in the newspaper clipping on Sarah Ellen's death. (See newspaper clipping for story on the death of Sarah Ellen Millison Scalf).
John Francis was very upset over the death of his wife and the cause of her death. It is unknown where he may have gone after Sarah Ellen's death for he cannot be found on any of the census records of Peoria County, Illinois or the surrounding area. John Francis is reported to have been in the Civil War but he should have been listed on one of the 1860 censuses of Indiana, Illinois or Iowa where most of these family members were found. However, John Francis does not show up on any census until 1900. He is then found on the 1900 census of Memphis (Shelby County) Tennessee with his second wife and family. It is indicated in Chapter XIV,Chronicles of the Scalf Family that some of the Benjamin Scalf Jr. line moved to Memphis.
John Francis remarried to Mary Helen Ferguson around 1875 by estimation and had eight more children. Although Mary's middle name was Helen, John always called her Ellen according to information given to Barbara. John's death certificate states that he was born January 3, 1839 in Virginia and died May 1, 1925 in Berkeley, California. (See Website for death certificate) His occupation was “Cabinet Maker.”
The death record states that his father was John Scalf, born in Virginia and the name of his mother was unknown; however, it is listed that she was born in Virginia. Barbara states that it was told to her that John had been a Medic in the Civil War among other professions. John seemed to be very talented and a well-educated man for that period. He was also reported to have been an “Undertaker.” Barbara states that John was called “Black John” due to his very dark skin. (Photo of John Francis Scalf Family).
John died of chronic endocarditis and is buried at the Mt. View Cemetery in Berkeley, California. Barbara states that Mary Helen had Alzheimer's disease when the information was stated on his death record and it is unknown if she gave the correct information concerning the father of her husband, John F. Scalf. There does seem to be conflicting information concerning this John Francis Scalf and it is difficult to ascertain which information might be near correct.
As stated above, John Francis does not appear on a census until 1900 in Shelby County, Tennessee. A look-up on the 1870 census of Shelby County, Tennessee does not reveal a John, Francis, J. F., or John Frances Scalf. The 1880 census of Shelby was destroyed and there is no 1890 census. According to the births of his children and information from Barbara on their birthplaces, John F. would have gone to the Memphis area between 1876-1879. He was not found on the 1870 census of Indiana or Illinois.
The family of J. F. Scalf is listed on the 1900 Shelby County, Tennessee census as follows:
1900 Shelby County, TN--8th Civil District:
SCALF, J. F. 52 (b) Virginia January 1841
Mary 41 (b) Illinois Oct. 1858
Almeda 24 (b) Indiana May 1876
Otto 14 (b) Tennessee April 1886
Leo 11 (b) Tennessee Feb. 1889
Mary 5 (b) Tennessee Oct. 1894
John Iving (Ivan) 8 mo. (b) Tennessee Sept. 1899
This information was sent to Barbara Bowman and she responded with the following email on this family.
"Deleana was born in 1879. She died in TN in 1884. I have her obit-the actual newspaper clipping. Francis Erwin was born 2-10-1883. He died in TN, 1-26-1886. Then Otto was born 4-13-1886. So there were 2 other kids between Almeda and Otto. There was another between Leo and Mary who died. Otto was born in Arlington TN, not IL.
Deleana was born in Bartlett, TN. I don't know where that is, but that would point to where they might have been living in 1880, since she was b in early 1879. I will look on my TN map to see what county it is. There must have been kin in the area."
The map shows that Bartlett was not far from Arlington. Barbara states that Deleana was born in 1879 and died of brain fever (meningitis) in 1884. Since Deleana was born in Bartlett, Tennessee which was near Arlington (Shelby County, Tennessee) then we know that John Francis was living there 1879-1884. The next child, Francis Ervin was born 2-10-1883. He died in TN, 1-26-1886.
However, we don't know if Francis Erwin was born in Bartlett or Arlington. The next child, Otto was born 4-13-1886 and Barbara states that he was born in Arlington, Tennessee.
Sometime between 1884 and 1886, John Francis moved from Bartlett, Tennessee to Arlington and most likely, the rest of the children were born in Arlington. The oldest child, Almeda, was born in Indiana around 1876 according to the census and Barbara agrees with this. We know that Sarah Ellen Ferguson Scalf, first wife of John Francis Scalf, died in December of 1873. John Francis remarried to Mary Helen by 1875 for Almeda, their first child, was born 1876.
Due to fact that the death record states that John was born in Virginia and was the son of John and that his mother was born in Virginia as well, could suggest that John Francis Scalf could have been a son of John Scalf Jr., and Martha “Patsy” Counts. The fact that it was stated he was born or lived in Evansville, Indiana, could also indicate a connection to the Ira Scalf line, brother of John Scalf Jr.
However, his granddaughter states he was a brother of Jonah Scalf.
Records state that Jonah had a sister, Rebecca Scalf Hankle/Hinkle. This
Rebecca was married in Washington County, Tennessee to James Valentine Hankle/Hinkle
and this suggests that the family could have been from the David S. Scalf or
the Benjamin Scalf Sr. family. This is the dilemma concerning John Francis Scalf.
There does not seem to be any specific records that suggest exactly which line
of the family John Francis Scalf might belong to. These are the three most
likely candidates and further research is ongoing into this. All help would be
appreciated by these descendants.

MALINDA SCALF and
WILLIAM L. CASH
Malinda Scalf and William L. Cash were married March 17, 1836 in Washington County, Tennessee. Very little is known of this family and research is ongoing. What is known comes from the 1850 Carter County, Tennessee census.
William Cash was born about 1812 in Tennessee. His wife, Malinda was born abt. 1815 in Tennessee. They are listed on the 1850 Tennessee census with the following children. All birth dates are estimated from this census. All of the members of this family were listed as born in Tennessee. The Cash family was also found in Roane County, Tennessee and moving on to Middle Tennessee. This may be another reason why John Francis Scalf went to the Memphis area to live. It appears that Malinda Scalf Cash and her husband remained in the Carter/Washington County area, but some of her husband’s family moved on.
1850 Carter County, Tennessee census:
Cash, William 38 estimated birth 1812
Malinda 35 “ 1815
Martha 13 “ 1837
Mary 11 “ 1839
Henry 9 “ 1841
John 7 “ 1843
Elizabeth 6 “ 1844
Joseph 4 “ 1846
Daniel 2 “ 1848
James M. 2 mo. “ 1850
Joanna Scalf, another possible sister of Jonah, is reported to have married Frank Maine and lived in the Illinois area. No further information is found on this family.
Elizabeth Scalf married Maranda White November 8, 1860 in Washington County, Tennessee. Since this marriage is later than the others, it could be a second marriage or Elizabeth was a possible child of one of the families above. She may possibly have been a granddaughter of David S. Scalf of Carter County, Tennessee. Very little is known about this Elizabeth.
One Elizabeth Scalf and her husband are reported to have been killed by Indians and her children went to live with Rebecca Scalf and James Hankle/Hinkle in Illinois. However, no records have been found to confirm this statement. It does appear however that she could be the Betsy Scalf from the 1850 Washington County, Tennessee census with children, Phebe and Dan (Possibly, Daniel Wesley?).
These families are very puzzling and there seems to be references to both the David and Benjamin lines that are similar. It does seem unlikely that David S. Scalf would have had only four or five children while John Sr., and Benjamin had such large families. However, not enough proof has been forthcoming on either of these families to be able to properly place all of the children correctly.
Mahala Scalf, another family in the Carter/Washington County, Tennessee area married twice; first, to William Moon of Washington County, Tennessee and second to James Moore of the same area. No further information has been found on William or James and Mahala. There was a movement of the Moon family to the area of Sevierville, Tennessee, then to Roan County, Tennessee and Barbara finds a large amount of them in the Memphis area. However, it is unknown if these families were the family of William Moon. No information is known of Mahala's second husband, James Moore, or where this family went. One James Moore and family resided in the Carter County area but it is unknown if this is the same family.
Updates on these families will be posted as information is available.
