MISCELLANEOUS SCALF FAMILIES
This chapter will cover the various Scalf families, including the Skelf family, that cannot be placed with an existing Scalf line. It is difficult to determine which line these folks may belong to and they have been placed in separate sections of the Miscellaneous Scalf Families chapter for this reason. There are a number of families in the Carter/Washington County, Tennessee area, as well as the McDonough County, Illinois area that could have been children of either Benjamin Scalf Sr. or David S. Scalf. The Skelf family is a small group from the Northern Georgia area. Also, the Scaff families of Davidson County, Tennessee and the Scalf families of Greenville, South Carolina will be discussed.

JOSHUA SCALF
Joshua Scalf is listed as a child of Lewis Scalf, according to Elmer Scalf in his book, Scalf Family History, Chapter III, Lewis Scalf. Earlier in Chapter III, Elmer makes the following statement: "It was shortly after 1810 that Lewis migrated south to Greenville, South Carolina where he is listed in the 1820 Census. Lewis was 75 by now and his son, William Scalf, had moved with him to South Carolina. Another son, Joshua, went to Greenville, South Carolina later on." Henry Scalf did not discuss Joshua Scalf in his book, Chronicles of the Scalf Family. Unfortunately, there is little additional information concerning Joshua Scalf except for his Civil War army record and a few early census records.
If we look at the census records, it appears Joshua Scarff on the 1820 census is the same Joshua found in Greenville, South Carolina in 1850. It is uncertain if the female, age 16 - 26, in the home is his wife or if this is an older daughter. If this is the same Joshua, he was born 1780 on the 1850 census of SC. This could be a wife or his wife had died and this is an older daughter. Joshua most likely married 1800 – 1805, if he was born 1780; so this is probably a wife and daughter.
Joshua Scalf is listed on the record of men in the U. S. Army prior to the establishment of peace on May 17, 1815. He is a member of the 43rd USA regiment commanded by Captain S. G. Earle. Joshua is 5 ft, 11 3/4 inches tall, blue eyes, dark hair and a light complexion. Joshua is a 23 years old farmer from Halifax County, North Carolina and appears to be living in South Carolina. In the remarks on the document, Joshua was: " R. R. Jan. - 1815 - D. R. Columbia S. C. February 16, 1815. Present Corpl."
Joshua Scalf's birth date is all over the place, depending on the method used on the early census records and his age on the U. S. Army record. The birth date of about 1792 that is determined by the U. S. Army record is probably the most accurate due to his young age and a more exact method of listing the age of each member in the Army. In the 1850 census below, Joshua is probably about 58 years old instead of 70.
There is a strong possibility that Joshua Scalf is the father of Henry Scalf. Even though we do not have any proof, Joshua Scalf (house #541) is living very close to Henry Scalf (house # 518) during the 1850 census.

Sarah may or may not have been a younger wife of Joshua. If not, these kids are probably grandchildren of Joshua and Sarah was his daughter-in-law. Joshua is now missing again after this census and most likely has died. However, I believe Martha and Rebecca are found again on the 1860 census in other homes, most likely relatives. There is a Sarah Scalf that is close to the same age as the younger Sarah above, living in the home of William Crane in 1850. It is unknown where she fits in.

HENRY RAY SCALF
The parents of Henry Scalf are
not known for certain at this time, even though Joshua and Sarah Scalf in
the 1850 Greenville County, SC census are strong candidates. According to
his headstone, Henry was born April 2, 1827 and died August 24, 1920. Henry
served with the Confederate Army. He enlisted on December 2, 1861 and was a
member of the 16th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry (Greenville Regiment),
Company C. Henry was captured by the Union Army on May 17, 1865 in
Hartwell, GA.
Henry married
Rebecca Jones, the daughter of Sallie Mayfield Jones. The father of Rebecca
is uncertain at this time; however, William Madison Jones appears to be the
father of Rebecca, but Frances Jones, the brother of Madison Jones, is
another possibility.
Rebecca Scalf is listed in the will of her grandfather, William Mayfield.

1) Ellen Reins 23.63
2) Rebecca Scalf 23.63
3) William W. Jones 23.63
Rebecca was from Double Springs, SC and born about 1829. Henry and Rebecca
married in 1846 and had 10 children. Rebecca is buried in the old Jones
family cemetery in Greenville SC, which is now destroyed. Henry "took up"
with Margaret Adkins. Margaret and Henry never married and she raised some
of the children of Henry and Rebecca. Margaret had two illegitimate sons,
Benjamin and Samuel Adkins. Benjamin died in the Civil war and Samuel
served with distinction with the 16 SC Vol. in Greenville SC. After the war
Samuel Adkins, my great grandfather, married Henry and Rebecca Scalf's
daughter, Mary Ann, and so began the Adkins sage. Henry and Margaret lived
together until his death. Margaret drew a Confederate pension. Henry is
buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Piedmont Park,
a suburb of Greenville,
SC, and Margaret was buried in the pauper
cemetery in Anderson, SC. (Courtesy of James Adkins)

JOSEPH JACOB SCALF
Son of
Joshua Scalf & Sarah ____
The parents of Joseph Scalf are unknown at this time, but several clues point to Joshua and Sarah Scalf of Greenville County, South Carolina. I will discuss all the events and documents that support this theory in the paragraphs below. First, in the home of Joshua Scalf in the 1850 Greenville County, SC census is a son name Joab. This name is hard to read and could be a short version of Joseph or Jacob. Also, due to the use of both names in the Army records, Joseph Jacob Scalf may be the full name of this young soldier. Based on records provided by his wife, Susan Scalf, and the Confederate Army, Joseph was born in Habersham, GA. If this is true, the family of Joseph Scalf moved to South Carolina when he was very young, since on later records he lists South Carolina as his state of birth.
According to Army records that were dated March 1, 1864, Joseph Scalf was 25 years old, 6 ft, 1 inch tall, with gray eyes, dark hair and a dark complexion.

Later, we find Joseph and his family in the 1860 Buncombe County, NC census. The Scalf family of South Carolina had roots in North Carolina and spent time traveling and living in both locations.

On April 25, 1863, Jacob joined the Confederate Army at Moultrieville, SC for a three year period, and he joined his company on June 4, 1863. A few months later, on September 8, 1863, Jacob was killed during a bombardment of Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island, SC. During this short period, all of the information concerning Jacob and Joseph Scalf was filed under Joseph Scalf. The records appear to start out using Jacob Scalf and evolve into the use of Joseph Scalf on later documents.
On April 11, 1864, Susan Scalf appointed a lawyer, W. F. Taylor, to collect all compensation due to Joseph Scalf for services rendered to Confederate States of America. (PART 1 & PART 2)

The information on Joshua Scalf and Joseph Scalf is limited and we cannot determine with any certainty which line they belong to in the Scalf family. As additional records become available, a link between Joshua and Joseph Scalf and the other Scalf lines may be made.

SCALF/SCAFF
DAVIDSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE
The Scalfs and Scaffs of Davidson County,
Tennessee have been very hard to place in the scheme of things. Henry Scalf
did not discuss the Scalfs/Scaffs of Davidson County, Tennessee in his book,
Chronicles of the Scalf Family.
However, Elmer Scalf briefly touched on this group of Scalfs/Scaffs on
page 12 in his book, Scalf Family History.
We are able to follow this family group
back to the 1850 census without much difficulty, but the census records
before 1850 do not provide much detailed information at a critical time in
the lives of James and Monroe Scaff/Scalf. As you will see in many cases,
Scaff and Scalf are used interchangeably in the census records depending on
the enumerator and how much he or she was familiar with the family name.
James and Monroe Scaff/Scalf appear to be brothers, but, at the moment, the
parents of the two men are hard to identify. As was covered above on page
12 of Scalf Family History, it does look like John and Temperance
Scalf of North Carolina were their parents, but John Scalf, Jr., the son of
John Scalf, Sr. - the Revolutionary War Soldier, also looks like a
candidate.
JAMES SCALF/SCAFF
Brother of
Monroe Scalf/Scaff
James Scalf married Lucinda Creech a few months before he married Catherine Beard. The marriage to Lucinda occurred on April 10, 1850 and a short time later, on July 10, 1850, James married Catherine Bread. At the moment, we do not know what happened to Lucinda Creech.
Catherine Beard was born on January 24, 1830 and died on February 22, 1921.

My father was born in 1899. I was born March 7, 1927, and I am 79 now. My mother died a few months after I was born. My father placed me in St. Mary's orphanage in Nashville Tenn. My father hoboes around the country. He may have been gone from Nashville at that time. I was 3 in 1930. But he spent most of his entire life in Nashville Tn. He lived to be 78. My grand-parents on my father side were all dead before I was born. My father was married three times. He and his first wife had a baby girl that only lived for a short time. I was the only child my mother (2nd wife) had before she died. My father and his third wife had a son names Willie Scalf. Everyone call him Billie. He died at about age 46. They all lived in Nashville. My father had six brothers one of them name John had 11 children. My father and his brother John married two sisters who's last name were Carney. They lived just outside of Nashville at a place called Whites' Creek which is about 10 miles from downtown Nashville. I have written a book. It is kind of a biography of my own life.
My father had six brothers. One died young. My father was the oldest born in 1899. They were John, Willie, Edd Clarence, Marion and my father Joe. They all lived most of their lives in and around Nashville Tenn. One of his brothers Marion is still living and is 96. He lives in Nashville.

James Monroe
Scalf was born on January 22, 1855 in Davidson County, Tennessee. He died
of a coronary occlusion and chronic tuberculosis on January 20, 1939 in at
the home of William "Willie" Bush Curtis at 316 Grace Avenue, Nashville,
Tennessee. In 1880 he was a florist/caretaker at the Mount Olivet Cemetery
in Nashville, Tennessee. He lived in Mount Olivet, Nashville, Tennessee for
a while, and then moved to a field on Murfreesboro Road and later back to a
larger house in Mount Olivet. After a period of time, James moved to
University Street when daughter Minnie Mai was fifteen years old. Then he
moved to Carroll Street where his daughter Ruth Estelle Scalf died at age
twenty. Grandmas Scalf (James' mother), William and Aunt Ellen also died
there. James was sick with pneumonia at the time; so they pushed Grandma
Scalf's casket into his room so he could see her. James M. Scalf worked as
a florist for thirty-five years. James Monroe Scalf and Minerva Patilla
Williams were married on October 24, 1880. He was buried in Mount Olivet
Cemetery, Nashville, Tennessee.
Minerva Williams was born on 24 Apr 1859 in Nashville, Tennessee.
Minerva's full name was Minerva Patilla
Williams. My mother has her cast iron griddle in her kitchen. She does not
use it as it is too worn to be of any use.
Minerva died of asthma with a cerebral hemorrhage on June 22, 1932 at 1505
Cahal Avenue (pronounced Kay-hall), Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.
She was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, Tennessee.

Katie Elizabeth "Bessie" Scalf was born February 1, 1882 and died in 1925. Bessie married Edward R. Roseacher (1879-1918). Roseacher is pronounced Rose-ocker.('ock' like in 'sock'). I have heard it pronounced so many different ways; so, I thought I would just make sure. (Courtesy - Joel Buckner)

Monroe Scaff, Jr., the son of Monroe Scaff and Francis Baker, is living with his parents in the 1870 census. However, he does not appear in the census again until 1920. Since the 1920 census is very hard to read, it cannot be determined whether he is listed as a widower or is divorced. At some point after the 1870 census, Monroe leaves Nashville, Tennessee and moves to Dallas, Texas. The bits and pieces of information that have surfaced during the 1890s point to a marriage between Monroe Scaff and Isabella Cheek.
Isabella is living in the home of her parents during the 1870 census, and she is 14 years old.

In the 1900 census, Isabella Scaff is living next door to the family of H.
M. Cheek. Isabella's mother, Mary Cheek, is living in the home. It appears
that Isabella was married to a Downwright during the 1879-1880 time period.
Later, it appears that Monroe and Isabella were married between 1886-1887.
Many times in the past, individuals were listed on the census as widowed
when, in fact, they were divorced. This appears to be the relationship
between Monroe and Isabella, since Monroe is living with his sister and is
listed as divorced.

THOMAS SKELF
The family names of Scalf, Scealf and Skelf can be found in Northeastern Georgia during the early to middle 1800s. There appears to be a connection between the Scalfs in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia with the Skelf family in Georgia. Also, William Scalf, the son of Lewis Scalf, moved from North Caroline to Greenville, South Carolina and later to Habersham County, Georgia around 1830. During this period, Scalf was spelled Scalf, Scealf, and Skelf.
The parents of Thomas Skelf have not been identified at this time. Thomas Skelf was born about 1865 in North Carolina. He married Nancy Josephine Hizelup. Later, Thomas and Josephine were separated or he was too sick to travel, since Josephine Skelf is living in Whitfield County, Georgia near the Tennessee border with their children and a boarder when the 1910 census was taken. Thomas Skelf died December 13, 1913 in Swain County, North Carolina. During the time between the 1910 and 1920 censuses, Josephine marries a Harris, but she is listed on the 1920 census as divorced.
By the early 1900s, several outstanding claims against the United States Government had been filed by the Cherokee Indians. On June 30, 1906, the U. S. Congress approved $1,000,000 for payment of those claims, and on August 24, 1907, Nancy Josephine Skelf filed an application for a share of this money. This application (Page 1, Page 2, Page 3) provides an invaluable look into the life of Josephine Skelf. Josephine was born December 23, 1865 as an only child and was raised as an orphan. Josephine's father, John Russell, was killed in the Civil War in 1865. Even though Josephine's application was rejected due to a lack of evidence, the Native American features of some of her descendents speak volumes about her ancestry.
Children of Thomas Skelf and Josephine Hizelup:
1) Julia Skelf - born October 10, 1887
2) Andrew Ellis Skelf - born February 11, 1890
3) Laura Skelf - born February 14, 1893
4) Sarah Etta Skelf - born April 24, 1895
5) Edmond (Edward) Skelf - born January 11, 1898
6) Eliza Skelf - born September 24, 1899
T. Skelf, in the 1880 census below, is a strong candidate for a young Thomas Skelf. According to the death certificate of Thomas Skelf, he was about 20 years old in 1880, but the date on the death certificate was a general date (about 1860) and not very accurate. However, in the application filed by Josephine on August 24, 1907, she stated that Thomas was 41 years old. In this case, Thomas was born about 1865 or very close to the birth date on the census record, and he died in Swain County, North Carolina. Since Thomas is living in Swain Co, NC as a young boy and was living in the same county at the time of his death, it would appear that Thomas has strong family ties to this area.
Unfortunately, Thomas Skelf has not been found before or after the 1880 census. Also, the fact that he is living with another family is troublesome. However, the parents of Thomas may be dead, and H. P. and Martha Brindle may be relatives.

REBECCA SCALF AND JAMES HANKLE/HINKLE
It is my opinion that this Rebecca is the same Rebecca living in the home of Nate (Nathaniel) Cash on the1850 census of Carter County, Tennessee. Rebecca would have been born in 1825 according to this census. Barbara Bowman’s record states that Rebecca Scalf Hankle/Hinkle was born June 18, 1823 in East Tennessee.
A Rebecca Scalf did marry James V. Hankle/Hinkle in Washington County, Tennessee on September 12, 1850 according to the marriages of Washington County, Tennessee. William L. Cash was listed as the Bondsman. (See marriages of Washington County TN). This is most likely William L. Cash, husband of Malinda Scalf. William L. Cash is a relative of some nature to Nate (Nathaniel) Cash but the exact relationship has not been identified. In all likelihood, the Rebecca in the home of Nate Cash in 1850 is the same Rebecca who married James Valentine Hankle/Hinkle in Washington County, Tennessee.
Barbara Bowman gave the birth dates for the children of James Hinkle and Rebecca Scalf, as well as the marriage of Phebe Tennessee and Mary Hankle/Hinkle, daughters of James and Rebecca Scalf Hankle/Hinkle
The only reference I have for the children of Elizabeth Scalf and Maranda White is the statement made by Mrs. Roy Scalf concerning the children being raised by Rebecca Scalf and James Hankle/Hinkle.
From Barbara Bowman’s records, it is listed that a Joanna Jackson died on October 14, 1876. There is no reference as to who this Joanna might have been or when she was born. There is no reference as to where she died either. Other information suggests that a Joanna/Johanna married Frank Maine and lived in Illinois, but no county is mentioned. There might have been two marriages for Joanna and they may have been the same person. She may have been the sister of Jonah as stated in Barbara’s records.
In a letter dated January 29, 1984 from Catherine Scalf to Jean Grier concerning the family of Jonah Scalf of Illinois, Catherine states that James Hankle's g-granddaughter was born and grew up in the same area of Illinois.
She also states that James and Rebecca Scalf Hankle married in Tennessee and moved to Fulton County IL in the 1860s. She goes on to say that they brought with them children of Ran (Miranda) White and Elizabeth Scalf who were killed by Indians. James and Rebecca raised the two White children and their names were, Phebe and Wesley White. Rebecca Scalf Hankle died and James remarried and took in several children to raise. Jonah Scalf married several times in McDonough County and Fulton County, Illinois.
This is a quote from Catherine’s letter, "So perhaps Elizabeth was a sister to Rebecca who they think was a sister to Jonah Scalf who was gr. grandfather of Raymond Wilcoxen of Canton, IL."
FAMILY OF REBECCA SCALF

JAMES VALENTINE HANKLE/HINKLE
Rebecca Scalf was born June 18, 1823 in East Tennessee. She married James Valentine Hankle September 12, 1850 in Washington County, Tennessee. He was born December 13, 1827 in East Tennessee.
The children of Rebecca and James are from a Bible record of a descendant and records from Barbara Bowman.
Children of Rebecca Scalf and James Hankle are:

JOHN FRANCIS SCALF
1839-1925
This chapter will cover what is known about John Francis Scalf of Illinois. John Francis is said to have been a brother of Jonah Scalf. However, we have been unable to confirm this with documentation at this time. I have listed John F. as Jonah's brother because the grandmother of Barbara Bowman states that they were brothers. There seems to be a considerable amount of years between their births, but I'm sure that she would have known who her grandfather’s family was.
The exact parentage of Jonah Scalf and John Francis Scalf is not clear. Elmer Scalf believed them to be sons of John Scalf and Temperence Wiley of Halifax County, North Carolina. I cannot confirm or deny this at this time and they may very well have been. However, it is reported that Jonah had a sister Rebecca who married James Valentine Hankle/Hinkle in Carter County, Tennessee. If this is correct, then this indicates that these folks were from Carter County, Tennessee.
Possibly, the birth dates of both Jonah and John Francis Scalf are off and they may have been born closer together than records indicate. Although there is no confirming evidence at this time that Jonah and John Francis were sons of Benjamin Sr., other evidence seems to suggest that they were.
These two men were in the Illinois and Iowa area along with other family members that appear to belong to the Benjamin Scalf Sr. line. It is stated in Chronicles of the Scalf Family and Scalf Family History that at least Jonah was possibly from the John Scalf line of Halifax County, North Carolina. However, I have found no evidence that he was. There seems to be more evidence that he was from Benjamin's line but I could be wrong and any information to confirm or deny this is certainly welcome. Any, and all help on this line of the family would be greatly appreciated.
John Francis Scalf stated that he was born in Virginia on several different records. His second wife, Mary Helen Ferguson also stated this on his death record. It has also been stated that he was born in Evansville, Indiana. Due to this statement, it should be noted that some of the Ira Scalf line was living in Evansville, Indiana for a time, and further research could prove a link to the Ira Scalf line as well.
John Francis Scalf married Sarah Ellen Millison on October 22, 1872 in Peoria, Illinois by W. C. Kneff. (See marriages of Illinois and marriage license on website). Fourteen months later, Sarah Ellen Millison Scalf died. According to a newspaper account, she died in December of 1873. It is unknown if the son lived or not as no records have been found concerning him. There was no mention of the death of this son in the newspaper clipping on Sarah Ellen's death.
Note: Sarah E. Scalf had a business selling sewing machines. The Peoria City Directories listed Scalf, S E, sewing machines - Adams bs 5 res 2 b Franklin, and Scalf, John F. cabinet maker - res Adams bs2 b Franklin. Sarah Scalf died on or about the 14th day of December, 1873 in Peoria Illinois, leaving a husband John F Scalf and one child, a son Frances Norman Scalf. Francis Norman Scalf, 2 months, 30 days, died or buried 3-11-1873?. (Courtesy - Rick)
