MISCELLANEOUS SCALF FAMILIES
This chapter will cover the various Scalf families, including the Skelf family, that cannot be placed with an existing Scalf line. As previously stated, it is difficult to determine which line these folks may belong to and I have placed them in separate chapters for this reason. There are a number of families in the Carter/Washington County, Tennessee area, as well as the McDonough County, Illinois area that could have been children of either Benjamin Scalf Sr. or David S. Scalf. The Skelf family is a small group from the Northern Georgia area.
REBECCA SCALF AND JAMES HANKLE/HINKLE
It is my opinion that this Rebecca is the same Rebecca living in the home of Nate (Nathaniel) Cash on the1850 census of Carter County, Tennessee. Rebecca would have been born in 1825 according to this census. Barbara Bowman’s record states that Rebecca Scalf Hankle/Hinkle was born June 18, 1823 in East Tennessee.
A Rebecca Scalf did marry James V. Hankle/Hinkle in Washington County, Tennessee on September 12, 1850 according to the marriages of Washington County, Tennessee. William L. Cash was listed as the Bondsman. (See marriages of Washington County TN). This is most likely William L. Cash, husband of Malinda Scalf. William L. Cash is a relative of some nature to Nate (Nathaniel) Cash but the exact relationship has not been identified. In all likelihood, the Rebecca in the home of Nate Cash in 1850 is the same Rebecca who married James Valentine Hankle/Hinkle in Washington County, Tennessee.
Barbara Bowman gave the birth dates for the children of James Hinkle and Rebecca Scalf, as well as the marriage of Phebe Tennessee and Mary Hankle/Hinkle, daughters of James and Rebecca Scalf Hankle/Hinkle
The only reference I have for the children of Elizabeth Scalf and Maranda White is the statement made by Mrs. Roy Scalf concerning the children being raised by Rebecca Scalf and James Hankle/Hinkle.
From Barbara Bowman’s records, it is listed that a Joanna Jackson died on October 14, 1876. There is no reference as to who this Joanna might have been or when she was born. There is no reference as to where she died either. Other information suggests that a Joanna/Johanna married Frank Maine and lived in Illinois, but no county is mentioned. There might have been two marriages for Joanna and they may have been the same person. She may have been the sister of Jonah as stated in Barbara’s records.
In a letter dated January 29, 1984 from Catherine Scalf to Jean Grier concerning the family of Jonah Scalf of Illinois, Catherine states that James Hankle's g-granddaughter was born and grew up in the same area of Illinois.
She also states that James and Rebecca Scalf Hankle married in Tennessee and moved to Fulton County IL in the 1860s. She goes on to say that they brought with them children of Ran (Miranda) White and Elizabeth Scalf who were killed by Indians. James and Rebecca raised the two White children and their names were, Phebe and Wesley White. Rebecca Scalf Hankle died and James remarried and took in several children to raise. Jonah Scalf married several times in McDonough County and Fulton County, Illinois.
This is a quote from Catherine’s letter, "So perhaps Elizabeth was a sister to Rebecca who they think was a sister to Jonah Scalf who was gr. grandfather of Raymond Wilcoxen of Canton, IL."
FAMILY OF REBECCA SCALF
And
JAMES VALENTINE HANKLE/HINKLE
Rebecca Scalf was born June 18, 1823 in East Tennessee. She married James Valentine Hankle September 12, 1850 in Washington County, Tennessee. He was born December 13, 1827 in East Tennessee.
The children of Rebecca and James are from a Bible record of a descendant and records from Barbara Bowman.
Children of Rebecca Scalf and James Hankle are:
1) Mary Lucinda Hankle - born September 24, 1854; married Thomas Lickes, May 11, 1872.
JOHN FRANCIS SCALF
1839-1925
This chapter will cover what is known about John Francis Scalf of Illinois. John Francis is said to have been a brother of Jonah Scalf. However, we have been unable to confirm this with documentation at this time. I have listed John F. as Jonah's brother because the grandmother of Barbara Bowman states that they were brothers. There seems to be a considerable amount of years between their births, but I'm sure that she would have known who her grandfather’s family was.
The exact parentage of Jonah Scalf and John Francis Scalf is not clear. Elmer Scalf believed them to be sons of John Scalf and Temperence Wiley of Halifax County, North Carolina. I cannot confirm or deny this at this time and they may very well have been. However, it is reported that Jonah had a sister Rebecca who married James Valentine Hankle/Hinkle in Carter County, Tennessee. If this is correct, then this indicates that these folks were from Carter County, Tennessee.
Possibly, the birth dates of both Jonah and John Francis Scalf are off and they may have been born closer together than records indicate. Although there is no confirming evidence at this time that Jonah and John Francis were sons of Benjamin Sr., other evidence seems to suggest that they were.
These two men were in the Illinois and Iowa area along with other family members that appear to belong to the Benjamin Scalf Sr. line. It is stated in Chronicles of the Scalf Family and Scalf Family History that at least Jonah was possibly from the John Scalf line of Halifax County, North Carolina. However, I have found no evidence that he was. There seems to be more evidence that he was from Benjamin's line but I could be wrong and any information to confirm or deny this is certainly welcome. Any, and all help on this line of the family would be greatly appreciated.
John Francis Scalf stated that he was born in Virginia on several different records. His second wife, Mary Helen Ferguson also stated this on his death record. It has also been stated that he was born in Evansville, Indiana. Due to this statement, it should be noted that some of the Ira Scalf line was living in Evansville, Indiana for a time, and further research could prove a link to the Ira Scalf line as well.
John Francis Scalf married Sarah Ellen Millison on October 22, 1872 in Peoria, Illinois by W. C. Kneff. (See marriages of Illinois and marriage license on website). Fourteen months later, Sarah Ellen Millison Scalf died. According to a newspaper account, she died in December of 1873. It is unknown if the son lived or not as no records have been found concerning him. There was no mention of the death of this son in the newspaper clipping on Sarah Ellen's death.
Note: Sarah E. Scalf had a business selling sewing machines. The Peoria City Directories listed Scalf, S E, sewing machines - Adams bs 5 res 2 b Franklin, and Scalf, John F. cabinet maker - res Adams bs2 b Franklin. Sarah Scalf died on or about the 14th day of December, 1873 in Peoria Illinois, leaving a husband John F Scalf and one child, a son Frances Norman Scalf. Francis Norman Scalf, 2 months, 30 days, died or buried 3-11-1873?. (Courtesy - Rick)
Link to newspaper article concerning the death of Sarah E. Scalf - December 20, 1873 - Part 1, Part 2, & Part 3
Sarah Ellen Millison was buried December 16, 1873 in the Springdale Cemetery, Peoria County, IL
John Francis was very upset over the death of his wife and the cause of her death. It is unknown where he may have gone after Sarah Ellen's death for he cannot be found on any of the census records of Peoria County, Illinois or the surrounding area. John Francis is reported to have been in the Civil War but he should have been listed on one of the 1860 censuses of Indiana, Illinois or Iowa where most of these family members were found. However, John Francis does not show up on any census until 1900. He is then found on the 1900 census of Memphis (Shelby County) Tennessee with his second wife and family. It is indicated in Chapter XIV,Chronicles of the Scalf Family that some of the Benjamin Scalf Jr. line moved to Memphis.
John Francis remarried to Mary Helen Ferguson around 1875 by estimation and had eight more children. Although Mary's middle name was Helen, John always called her Ellen according to information given to Barbara. John's death certificate states that he was born January 3, 1839 in Virginia and died May 1, 1925 in Berkeley, California. Link to John F. Scalf Death Certificate) His occupation was “Cabinet Maker.”
John Francis Scalf was buried May 04, 1925 in the Mt. View Cemetery at Berkeley, CA.
The death record states that his father was John Scalf, born in Virginia and the name of his mother was unknown; however, it is listed that she was born in Virginia. Barbara states that it was told to her that John had been a Medic in the Civil War among other professions. John seemed to be very talented and a well-educated man for that period. He was also reported to have been an “Undertaker.” Barbara states that John was called “Black John” due to his very dark skin. Link to John Frances Scalf & family - 1892
John died of chronic endocarditis and is buried at the Mt. View Cemetery in Berkeley, California. Barbara states that Mary Helen had Alzheimer's disease when the information was stated on his death record and it is unknown if she gave the correct information concerning the father of her husband, John F. Scalf. There does seem to be conflicting information concerning this John Francis Scalf and it is difficult to ascertain which information might be near correct.
As stated above, John Francis does not appear on a census until 1900 in Shelby County, Tennessee. A look-up on the 1870 census of Shelby County, Tennessee does not reveal a John, Francis, J. F., or John Frances Scalf. The 1880 census of Shelby was destroyed and there is no 1890 census. According to the births of his children and information from Barbara on their birthplaces, John F. would have gone to the Memphis area between 1876-1879. He was not found on the 1870 census of Indiana or Illinois.
This information was sent to Barbara Bowman and she responded with the following email on this family.
"Deleana was born in 1879. She died in TN in 1884. I have her obit-the actual newspaper clipping. Francis Erwin was born 2-10-1883. He died in TN, 1-26-1886. Then Otto was born 4-13-1886. So there were 2 other kids between Almeda and Otto. There was another between Leo and Mary who died. Otto was born in Arlington TN, not IL.
Deleana was born in Bartlett, TN. I don't know where that is, but that would point to where they might have been living in 1880, since she was b in early 1879. I will look on my TN map to see what county it is. There must have been kin in the area."
The map shows that Bartlett was not far from Arlington. Barbara states that Deleana was born in 1879 and died of brain fever (meningitis) in 1884. Since Deleana was born in Bartlett, Tennessee which was near Arlington (Shelby County, Tennessee) then we know that John Francis was living there 1879-1884. The next child, Francis Ervin was born 2-10-1883. He died in TN, 1-26-1886.
However, we don't know if Francis Erwin was born in Bartlett or Arlington. The next child, Otto was born 4-13-1886 and Barbara states that he was born in Arlington, Tennessee.
Sometime between 1884 and 1886, John Francis moved from Bartlett, Tennessee to Arlington and most likely, the rest of the children were born in Arlington. The oldest child, Almeda, was born in Indiana around 1876 according to the census and Barbara agrees with this. We know that Sarah Ellen Millison Scalf, first wife of John Francis Scalf, died in December of 1873. John Francis remarried to Mary Helen by 1875 for Almeda, their first child, was born 1876.
Due to fact that the death record states that John was born in Virginia and was the son of John and that his mother was born in Virginia as well, could suggest that John Francis Scalf could have been a son of John Scalf Jr., and Martha “Patsy” Counts. The fact that it was stated he was born or lived in Evansville, Indiana, could also indicate a connection to the Ira Scalf line, brother of John Scalf Jr.
However, his granddaughter states he was a brother of Jonah Scalf. Records state that Jonah had a sister, Rebecca Scalf Hankle/Hinkle. This Rebecca was married in Washington County, Tennessee to James Valentine Hankle/Hinkle and this suggests that the family could have been from the David S. Scalf or the Benjamin Scalf Sr. family. This is the dilemma concerning John Francis Scalf. There does not seem to be any specific records that suggest exactly which line of the family John Francis Scalf might belong to. These are the three most likely candidates and further research is ongoing into this. All help would be appreciated by these descendants.

MALINDA SCALF and WILLIAM L. CASH
Malinda Scalf and William L. Cash were married March 17, 1836 in Washington County, Tennessee. Very little is known of this family and research is ongoing. What is known comes from the 1850 Carter County, Tennessee census.
William Cash was born about 1812 in
Tennessee. His wife, Malinda, was born about 1815 in Tennessee.
They are listed on the 1850 Tennessee census with the following children.
All birth dates are estimated from this census. All of the members of
this family were listed as born in Tennessee. The Cash family was also
found in Roane County, Tennessee and moving on to Middle Tennessee.
This may be another reason why John Francis Scalf went to the Memphis area
to live. It appears that Malinda Scalf Cash and her husband remained in the
Carter/Washington County area, but some of her husband’s family moved on.

Joanna Scalf, another possible sister of Jonah, is reported to have married Frank Maine and lived in the Illinois area. No further information is found on this family.
Elizabeth Scalf married Maranda White November 8, 1860 in Washington County, Tennessee. Since this marriage is later than the others, it could be a second marriage or Elizabeth was a possible child of one of the families above. She may possibly have been a granddaughter of David S. Scalf of Carter County, Tennessee. Very little is known about this Elizabeth.
One Elizabeth Scalf and her husband are reported to have been killed by Indians and her children went to live with Rebecca Scalf and James Hankle/Hinkle in Illinois. However, no records have been found to confirm this statement. It does appear however that she could be the Betsy Scalf from the 1850 Washington County, Tennessee census with children, Phebe and Dan (Possibly, Daniel Wesley?).
These families are very puzzling and there seems to be references to both the David and Benjamin lines that are similar. It does seem unlikely that David S. Scalf would have had only four or five children while John Sr., and Benjamin had such large families. However, not enough proof has been forthcoming on either of these families to be able to properly place all of the children correctly.
Mahala Scalf, another family in the Carter/Washington County, Tennessee area married twice; first, to William Moon of Washington County, Tennessee and second to James Moore of the same area. No further information has been found on William or James and Mahala. There was a movement of the Moon family to the area of Sevierville, Tennessee, then to Roan County, Tennessee and Barbara finds a large amount of them in the Memphis area. However, it is unknown if these families were the family of William Moon. No information is known of Mahala's second husband, James Moore, or where this family went. One James Moore and family resided in the Carter County area but it is unknown if this is the same family.

THOMAS SKELF
The family names of Scalf, Scealf and Skelf can be found in Northeastern Georgia during the early to middle 1800s. There appears to be a connection between the Scalfs in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia with the Skelf family in Georgia. Also, William Scalf, the son of Lewis Scalf, moved from North Caroline to Greenville, South Carolina and later to Habersham County, Georgia around 1830. During this period, Scalf was spelled Scalf, Scealf, and Skelf.
The parents of Thomas Skelf have not been identified at this time. Thomas Skelf was born about 1865 in North Carolina. He married Nancy Josephine Hizelup. Later, Thomas and Josephine were separated or he was too sick to travel, since Josephine Skelf is living in Whitfield County, Georgia near the Tennessee border with their children and a boarder when the 1910 census was taken. Thomas Skelf died December 13, 1913 in Swain County, North Carolina. During the time between the 1910 and 1920 censuses, Josephine marries a Harris, but she is listed on the 1920 census as divorced.
By the early 1900s, several outstanding claims against the United States Government had been filed by the Cherokee Indians. On June 30, 1906, the U. S. Congress approved $1,000,000 for payment of those claims, and on August 24, 1907, Nancy Josephine Skelf filed an application for a share of this money. This application (Page 1, Page 2, Page 3) provides an invaluable look into the life of Josephine Skelf. Josephine was born December 23, 1865 as an only child and was raised as an orphan. Josephine's father, John Russell, was killed in the Civil War in 1865. Even though Josephine's application was rejected due to a lack of evidence, the Native American features of some of her descendents speak volumes about her ancestry.
Children of Thomas Skelf and Josephine Hizelup:
1) Julia Skelf - born October 10, 1887
2) Andrew Ellis Skelf - born February 11, 1890
3) Laura Skelf - born February 14, 1893
4) Sarah Etta Skelf - born April 24, 1895
5) Edmond (Edward) Skelf - born January 11, 1898
6) Eliza Skelf - born September 24, 1899
T. Skelf, in the 1880 census below, is a strong candidate for a young Thomas Skelf. According to the death certificate of Thomas Skelf, he was about 20 years old in 1880, but the date on the death certificate was a general date (about 1860) and not very accurate. However, in the application filed by Josephine on August 24, 1907, she stated that Thomas was 41 years old. In this case, Thomas was born about 1865 or very close to the birth date on the census record, and he died in Swain County, North Carolina. Since Thomas is living in Swain Co, NC as a young boy and was living in the same county at the time of his death, it would appear that Thomas has strong family ties to this area.
Unfortunately, Thomas Skelf has not been found before or after the 1880 census. Also, the fact that he is living with another family is troublesome. However, the parents of Thomas may be dead, and H. P. and Martha Brindle may be relatives.
